Ah glitches and gremlins

I know in the previous post from earlier today, I mentioned that you could reply to comments on this site, well according to listener and my new friend, Henry who is located somewhere in the beauty of upper New England, there seems to be a problem with adding a comment (at least through Internet Explorer and Firefox - the two browsers I also use). So, I told you this was in it's infancy and bugs were probably running about. My apologies. I have my best man working on it (no it's not me, it might never get fixed it that was the case - I know OTR but as to HTML and the like not so much!)

Anyway, you can still send me an email and once we get the whole add your comment thing worked out, I'll let you know.

Thank for for your patience during this "beta test" + "under construction" period.

(As Marvin noted just before his diodes winked out for good "We apologize for the inconvenience.")

 Greg.

i think the comments are working fine. Smile
Hey Greg, Can you post who the writer is of the AWESOME Suspense episode "Dealthy Ernest" or "Ernest in Death" or whatever that was called. Wow, i really enjoyed that one. Thanks for that.

Also, Orson Welles spoke of the "Murder of Roger Ackroyed" on the Campbells playouse. Do you have that episode? I'm a huge Agatha Christie fan.

Thank you!

Thanks for this site, Greg. My XM is stuck on 164-you do a fantastic job! Did you remember to send your Mom a card?

Steph,

The author of the Suspense episode, Dead Ernest was Merwyn Gerard. He also wrote for The Whistler, Nightbeat and Escape. Despite the unique name my searches didn't find any TV, film or book credits, just radio.

As to Agatha Christie, I do have that episode; I last played it in September so it wont' be back until this fall at the earliest. I do have a Christie story (Where There's A Will) that hasn't been aired yet on the channel and I'll try to line it up soon.

Welcome to the blogosphere, Greg. My wife and I are driving to Chicago tomorrow so we'll be enjoying all the great shows on 164. The Cary Grant SUSPENSE show this morning was outstanding.

By the way - TCM recently ran NICK CARTER, MASTER DETECTIVE with Walter Pidgeon. A small role by Wally Maher as a murder victim!

Cheers.

Ray,

I love when I come across a show or a performer on TCM that is heard on 164! Often it's just luck that we are both are playing at the same time. It also happens because both 164 and TCM like to celebrate celebrity birthdays.

I agree that Cary Grant episode was wonderful!

Have an enjoyable and safe drive to my favorite city. Thanks for listening.

Greg,
I thoroughly enjoy the shows on xm164, and the trivia you add just enhances the stories. Even though it is neat to see the actors/actresses on TCM or AMC, it changes the way you think certian people and places look. I know Gerald Mohr looks nothing like I imagined. I have yet to see a picture of Richard Kollmar or Georgia Ellis. Thanks for the blog site so us radio classis fanatics can swap stories and other things.

Greg,

Cool blog! I'm still (off and on) looking for a picture/bio of Paul Hughes, the gravel voiced actor on some of the WXYZ radio shows. Haven't found anything yet.

In the pic of the four gunsmoke stars; the one looks like Orson Wells to me & I swear I don't see William Conrad in the picture - is the pic labeled correctly?

Love the site. I too discovered radio classics after the age they originally aired - My grandparents (in their 80's) love sitting and talking with me about the episodes (I think they find it funny that they are listening to all the shows again) but I get to hear a lot of family stories about what was happening when they originally aired. Smile

BTW - loved the Marvin quote - but of course all is fine if we just have our towel.

Janay,

You think William Conrad looks like Orson Welles? I suppose there is a slight resemblance as both had pudgy faces, and yes, possessed the same future ability to gain a LOT of weight. But I promise you that indeed is Bill Conrad standing right behind Georgia Ellis. Here's a link to another picture of the same cast with Conrad in the middle. content.answers.com/.../350px-Gunsmokeradio.jpg

Greg,
Thanks for the picture, and no they look nothing like I thought. Of course I knew the other Gunsmoke stars(two from Andy Griffith, and other shows, and William Conrad from Cannon), but Georgia Ellis is not what I had pictured. It's like my dad says, everybody who listens to the stories has different ideas of what the people, settings, etc should look like. Thanks again.

Maggie,

I'll try to post some Lone Ranger and Johnny Dollar shots soon. I don't see a website under your email. I'm the only one that can see the email addresses, they are not shown to the rest of the folks.

What's it say? Is it the Gravatar site? If so that is where you can go to get your own customized icon next to your post.

Hi Greg! Boy! You sure don't look anything like you sound! Smile
I am a W.O.W. (woman on wheels!) and I listen to your show every single night. Keeps me awake when the nights get long.

Just a thought, has XM ever considered creating it's own shows! In the style of OTR but new scripts, new actors, etc? Your program is SOOO hugely popular, Why couldn't you guys give rebirth to this genre? If not on your show, then a new station on XM? Thanks for all you do. Your commentary really brings so much life to this station!!!!

At the end of the radio production of Red River, John Wayne changes the cattle brand by including a "G". The film was shown on TV and at the end John changed the brand by adding a "M". Do you know why the difference????

Thank You

Greg, Just love 164. I hardly even know any other channel.

Last night, on a Jack Benny program, Bonita mentioned how Jack Benny was tired probably because he was walking for eight weeks.

Did you know that the network on which Jack Benny's program was heard had a contest? It was not on the Jack Benny program, but it was on on Sunday nights. I believe that it took place during a 15-minute program (possibly Walter Winchell's program or during another show that was on either right before or right after Winchell's program (it was a female gossip columnist from Hollywood who did this other show)). The contest was "The Walking Man." All that we heard was a person walking plus a clue was given. The "Walker" walked with a limp. The goal was to identify the person who was walking. A prize was awarded if a person could name the "Walker." Then, they made one phone call to a random phone number. If the recipient of the call could identify "The Walking Man," he (or she) would receive the prize. If they failed to "win," the prize would carry over to the next week and another prize would be added. This went on until somebody won.

From the clues that were given, nobody that we knew had any idea who the "The Walking Man" could be. Finally, on the Sunday when someone finally identified the "Walker," the clue was so obvious that everyone knew the answer. It was Jack Benny. It was so exciting. Each week, we would talk about it in school, and we all hoped that we would be called--even if we didn't know the answer.

The above is probably what Bonita was referring to.

Still, re Jack Benny stuff: I remember a Jack Benny show during World II when Dennis Day left the show to serve in the military. We were so sad when that happened--we all loved when Dennis was on the show. Not only did he sing, but he did great impersonations of so many personalities.

When Dennis returned to the show after World War II, I recall that there was no hype ahead of the show concerning his return. To us in the radio audience, it appeared that he just showed up. It was great to know that he was back.
