Anchors Aweigh

Of course you won't be able to "see" this scene;  (this is where I put a link to the Gene Kelly dances with Jerry The Mouse routine, but the You Tube clip is now gone, curses!!) So all I can find is this:

Anyway,  most of the rest of the popular musical will be heard in an hour-long Lux Radio Theatre version of the 1945 film. It features three of the original four leading roles Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and the now 86 year old Kathryn Grayson (sorry no Jerry The Mouse in this one).

It will debut on Monday at 6am ET and again at 10pm ET. Here is the direct link to next week's XM 164 schedule

http://www.xmradio.com/pdf/radioclassics_060208.pdf

Lots of "new to the channel this week" episodes including a great Richard Diamond that will be followed by a return of the hour long Suspense episode "The Kandy Tooth" - the never filmed sequel story to The Maltese Falcon with Howard Duff as Sam Spade

Also next week - birthday tributes to Dean Martin, Rosalind Russell, and Walter Tetley.

Greg.

As much as I eagerly listen to the stories, the Command Performance hosted by Bing, apparently recorded shortly after V-Day, was absolutely perfect for Memorial Day Weekend. What continues to strike me most about Old-Time-Radio are people's attitude: people weren't afraid to suffer for our country, they were proud, and willing to sacrifice, if by doing so would contribute to our winning the war. I'd like to hear that Ernie Pyle again. WOW. How can we still be that same United States? Would I be able to survive today as well as they did then?

I'd like to echo the previous sentiment. Our society has become so focused on "self" that, in my opinion, it has let the country down in a big way. Our grandparents' generation (my grandparents, anyway) knew nothing but hard work and the golden rule. That carried over into the war. I would venture to say that most Americans would be almost completely helpless if we were suddenly transported back to the 1935-1945 time frame. DIAL a telephone? No internet? the list is endless. Greg, I had asked about a D-Day simulcast in a previous e-mail. Any plans for something along those lines or just let the '40s channel do it? If so, I must apologise in advance because my receiver will be on XM4 all day june 6th! ;)

Brett,

D-Day coverage is the 40s on 4 baby; I neither have the shows nor the staff to put together anything that resembles their wonderful production. I usually yield to them (with the exception of June 6th 2004 when I had a big special to mark the 60th anniversary).

No apologies necessary, that is what I'll be listening to as well.

That's understandable, Greg. Tell them you've already got one staffer lined up (me) and start twisting some arms. Maybe we can get some of the "family" members from Chicago to make XM an offer they can't refuse? ;) On another note, have you or anyone else ever heard of Rat Patrol Radio? It's a Live 365 station and they are a cross between OTR and the '40s channel. Really a neat online station. I believe he does D-Day, VE day, etc. The guy who has the station is named Tor something. The last name escapes me.

I heard the Lux Radio Theatre's version of Anchor's Away. They did an awsome Job, and I am glad you added the explanation of why Gene Kelly broke his leg. I laugh when you said how. When is "Earth Abides" going to air?

Long live Sam Spade and Richard Diamond. I like Howard Duff as Sam better than Steven Dunne.

Thanks, Greg, for the Memorial Day "Command Performances." You have 6 months until Pearl Harbor and I have 2 perfect recommendations: 1.) "Johnny Quinn, USN," starring Olivia De Haviland and 2.) "Take Her Down" with Clark Gable.
You are so right -- back then, people were more than willing to go to war, use ration books and make other sacrifices for our boys and the war effort Not so today; too much of the "Vietnam Syndrome" and too many "peaceniks" I fear. At any rate, thank you for pointing this out and for all the marvelous programs. I'm now unemployed so I have my radio "stuck" on 164 all day.

I'm haing trouble undestanding blogs so I may not be doing this right but here's another suggestion: How about asking our bloggers which opening quote they like best; the "winner" can hear his/her favorite show as a "marathon." Opening quotes being things like "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men..." from "The Shadow"; "...and the smell of 'Gunsmoke' from Gunsmoke" and "...Hi-o, Silver" from "The Lone Ranger." You also may extend this to include music such as the Gunsmoke theme, the Lone Ranger theme and the theme from "The Whistler" among others. What do you think, Greg?

Just listened to The Phil Harris & Alice Faye show, and was interested is seeing what Walter Tetley looked like. Here is a site where you see a picture of him and some background on this wonderful Radio personality. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Tetley

Just copy and paste it

I loved this show. Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly were great. I think its a great way to honor those that died on that memorable day. Loved the show! Keep up the good work. I am a big fan of shows like The Shadow, Jack Benny, Dragnet and all the rest!
