Christmas In July?

by gregbell 5/14/2008 8:32:00 AM

Okay let's see if this democratic process works!

I first brought this up in the comment section last week, but let's put it out there for everyone to see.

For all the folks who love the Christmas themed radio shows, each year I get some complaints as well.   I also have some listeners VEHEMENTLY opposed to Christmas In July, which is a shame, because I think the majority likes it.

So should I have an entire Christmas in July week this year? It has been a 5 year tradition but as this is an election year, we'll let the democratic process decide this time (although at the end of the day, I can always envoke my super-duper delegate status Smile )

Let the tallying of comments commence!

First and foremost thank you for the wonderful job you do with all of the research and finding the old radios shows. I enjoy most all of the shows though lean toward the mystery/detective/western for the series and Fibber McGee which I never heard until XM radio...as to the Christmas in July shows I tend to like Christmas at Christmas but that's just me...keep up the excellent work.

PS: recent show about the end of war in Europe was outstanding as well as last years old reports about the D-Day landings in France...

No, no, no! It is bad enough to have to hear these repeats every December, let alone doing it all over again in July. If I have to hear The Shadow helping the poor little girl get butter for her Xmas cookies one more time and delivering food baskets to the good little people, I will get diabetes from too much sugar. And if I have to hear about Matt Dillon and Kitty walking the streets of Dodge City enjoying the Xmas lights glowing from the darling little bar she works at once again, I think I will unlock all the cell doors at his jail house and release the prisoners. Now that would make a GOOD holiday story!

For the folks who are voting no on this. You all could try a different take on this.. here at our house we do a mini christmas celebration. No, it's not like the real christmas where some of us celebrate it for something beyond the retail meaning it has for a lot, but it's a little bit of fun.
I grab some mini christmas trees that i line the driveway with in December and put those up, just takes a couple minutes. Some of you might be familiar with the Christmas Cracker tradition in England. I am partly English thru my mums side and we always save 4 Christmas Crackers for July. Recently I got some of that 'instant' snow you can find on the geeky websites and we had a snow ball fight. Then we cook up an Aussie style Christmas meal on the grill and have fun with it. We usually get the kids some gag gifts to open.
Just a thought...

Hi Greg I just want to compliment you on what a GREAT show you have I have been an OTR fan for a few years now and have been also collecting buying shows and have been listening to your show on and off for a couple of years but just recently started being a regular nightly listener I have an XM radio in the car and at home so I listen both places and I think that your Christmas in July idea is a great idea so you have the ok from me to do it. Those people wishing not to have it are so much like those people trying to take our rights away about having Christmas or saying Merry Christmas when it actually is Christmas time so don't pay any attention to them that's what the channel switching button is for or the on off switch is for if they don't care to listen they can chose to do one of either of those things. I am probably the youngest OTR listener there is here I am only 33 years old but my dad talks frequently about the shows he used to listen to and listens with me occasionally by the way I am from Almost Heaven West Virginia if you were wondering keep up the good work on the show.

Christmas is my favorite time of year. Even as a kid we had a Christmas in July. You could always have regular shows on Sun Tues Thurs Sat, and Chirstmas shows on Mon Wed and Fri, that way everyone gets something and they can listen to other shows on the days they don't won't to hear the shows they don't want to hear. Hows that for Democracy?

Mr. Lantz said:
"Those people wishing not to have it are so much like those people trying to take our rights away about having Christmas or saying Merry Christmas when it actually is Christmas time so don't pay any attention to them."
That is just too funny! There is a slight difference between sharing a solicited opinion and taking away peoples rights. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, I would contend that those voting FOR christmas in July are trying to take away our right to hear regular programming in July, and should be ignored!
Seriously though, Christmas in July is a nice touch to the channel. It is also, (as Greg pointed out) a tradition. However, 24/7 for 7 days is a bit much. I would agree with Glen. Keep the tradition, but thin it out a bit. I too am an OTR listener. As such, I find myself listening to the channel for 8 to 10 hours a day. With my irratic schedule, I find myself listenning to the same blocks of programming 2-3 times a week. I deal with it without complaint (since I don't wish to infringe on others rights Smile )but I couldn't take another full week of listening to 3 blocks of Christmas programming over and over. I vote AGAINST Christmas in July for 7 days. Christmas is, afer all, only one day.

Daniel, I have you beat. I am 29 (will be 30 on June 9) and I listen to 164. I have listened to OTR since the premiere of When Radio Was in the early 90's when it was hosted by Art Fleming. I got XM 3 1/2 years ago, largely because of Greg's channel.

I also think you are a little off base with your comments. No one is trying to take away any rights, thats why Greg put it up for a vote.

My faves on the channel are Gunsmoke, Suspense, Escape and the Whistler. I have to say, however, I loathe the comedies. The humor doesn't transfer well to today, whereas most of the drama does. But I would never want to take away the comedy for the people who love it.

Matt us

5/20/2008 4:36:56 AM

Kevin

Greg, I love your station! I have been listening to OTR since I was in my teens in the 70's. I love the suspense, mystery and horror shows like The Whistler, Escape, Suspense and The Shadow. I disagree a little bit with Matt about the comedies. I think there are quite a few shows where the humor holds up. I almost always laugh at Jack Benny, Charlie McCarthy, Lum 'N Abner, Burns & Allen and Fibber & Molly. The sitcom-type shows seem to hold up better than the Fred Allen types where they often dealt with events of the day. I am a huge fan of the Christmas programs, especially the offbeat ones like those that the the drama, suspense, horror and mystery shows would sometimes do. And how can you not like any of the "Jack Benny buys a gift for Don" shows? I say yes for Christmas in July!

Greg,

I'm afraid a day or two of Christmas in July is all I can take. I'd guess due to the relatively small number of Christmas-oriented programs, the repetition becomes excessive. I'm hopeful you will eventually get up to a two-year cycle on repeats. With Christmas episodes, it seems like the repeat cycle is more like 6 months when you try to cover both the "real" Christmas and Christmas in July.

As a compromise, I could agree to Christmas in July "blocks," interspersed with non-holiday episodes. But overall, I'd rather just have Christmas at Christmas time.

Best regards,

Earl

Kevin, I agree with you on the comedies. There Humor still holds up even today. To me, the funniest comedy radio show is the Jack Benny show. Everyone on his show is just so funny. That Dennis Day just kills me. You just can't have Old Time Radio without the comedies.

I have to tell you Greg. I can't figure out why some sponsor doesn’t bring back a "Lux" type radio show today. XM is the perfect forum and I am sure you could get the stars to act it out on radio. I truly believe that there is and audience for that type of programing. Maybe you can bring that up at the next staff meeting. If it flies, I want to be at the first taping. Have a great weekend everyone.

I agree with many of the other posters that if you do a Christmas in July, Greg, it would be nice to maybe focus on the oddball shows that don't normally get played during the regular Christmas time broadcasts.

I'm with you Bill on Jack Benny. I have hundreds of Benny shows and they all make me laugh to this day. XM's Sonic Theater isn't bad for current radio dramatizations, but the days of real radio theater is sadly gone. There is a great original "radio show" on the net at a site called www.atomsmotion.com. The series is called Atoms, Motion and the Void. It centers around the (often strange)exploits of 79 year old Sherwin Sleeves. It is quite original, very well written and produced and it's very good. He's up to episode 32 I believe. As usual someone takes what is said out of context like Mister Cassett did. What I was meaning was an opinion turns into someone getting offended by the idea and they say no you can't have that or no do not do that your infringing on my rights like Mister Cassette suggested we were infringing on the rights of other OTR listeners who enjoyed the regular programing no one said a word about taking away regular programing just saying that and I choose my words carefully that Greg's idea and the tradition should continue when shows are repeated I do not complain and a whole week of differing Christmas shows shouldn't be complained about either it's justanother fascet of the programing and should be taken in stride not complained about so you can see where an opinion like so many others can be taken as an offense and then someone complains and someone's rights are eventually going to be taken away it was true of prayer in schools that was someones opinion that it shouldn't be allowed in schools and it turned out to be that someone was offended and rights were taken away and prayer was taken out of schools so you can see where I was trying to go with it before mister Cassett twisted it into his own words. I am trying to say I am not here to offend anyone but I will not sit back and have my words twisted or be bullied just because you don't agree with my opinion everyone is intitled to their opinion but not when it infringes on others rights. And in my opinion someone saying you can't say Merry Christmas at Christmas time or have a nativity scene in your yard infringes on your rights of freedom of speach and freedom of religion and in my opinion those trying to kill the Christmas in July which has been a tradition for as long as I can remember are doing just that they are no better than those who voice their opinions about having a nativity scene in your yard or saying Merry Christmas at christmas time. But I will say no more on this subject because I am above petty squabling just wanted to clear up a few things and give my opinion like mister Cassett said it's only an opinion so why get offended over it.

So have you ever considered recreating an evening of Prime Time as it would have been? not necessarily matching the dates of original broadcasts but just an evening of program titles as it might have been listed in the Radio Guide?

William,
I had the same thought about that today. Maybe do one evening for each of the major networks... matching episodes to the dates if possible, and if not, then at least filling in with the correct shows.

I like the Christmas in July week. And what the heck, people who don't can always switch channels for a week. I do that when most of the comedies, and all of the music shows, are on, just because I don't love them as much as the dramas and mysteries. So, that's when I get over to Sonic, in the hopes that Harry Nile will be on, or over to the fabulous Bluesville.

I have to vote no on Christmas in July. In my opinion, the Christmas shows should be run in December. Besides, people don't go door-to-door singing Christmas Carols in July, do they? The Christmas shows are great, but a week of these shows in July is just too much!!

I have been a regular listener to your show since I received my first XM radio nearly three years ago, and I have enjoyed the Christmas in July broadcasts as a unique change of pace. I also think they should continue for the entire week as I am unable to listen all the time. I would hate to miss any of the shows I was particularly interested in because they were only broadcast at a time when I could not listen.

I also agree about Jack Benny. If I were programming for that week, I would include at least one different Benny "Christmas Shopping" show each day. Also, a Johnny Dollar "marathon", specifically, "The Nick Shurn Matter", would be a nice touch.

I do a lot of driving and can hear the shows more than once during the week and that's fine. However, when Christmas in July weeks comes around, I have a hard time hearing the same Christmas shows twice, probably because they're the same shows I heard in December. I think Christmas in July shows mixed in with regular programming would be great.

On a different note - I can never get too much Johnny Dollar!

What is the big deal with Christmas in July? In any given week there are some programs we like and some we are not so fond of. The discriminating listener picks and chooses what he or she listens to...as it should be (XM has a variety of alternatives). So if the CIJ programming doesn't appeal to a listener, explore a bit for a day or too...something you like will eventually be on Radio Classics again.

Dear Greg,

XM "Old Time Radio" is great. It's terrific to hear the radio programs I enjoyed when I was a kid.

Speaking of Christmas, have you ever found the "Grand Central Station" program where Christ Himself comes back as a physicianin a hospital?

Not to be a Scrooge; but what makes Christmas special culturally are the things that surround it. Therefore, I vote to have Christmas programs at Christmas time ONLY (NO); but, after all, you're the boss of your own program.

Respectfully,

The Jack Benny play about the Kentucky Derby was a stich, and just to prove that a joke that is 60 years old is still great today. When Phils Horse told Jacks horse that all Jack would see of him is his (phils) horses tail in Jack's (horses) face. Jack replied that if that was the case he will Bobbit it. The major complaint I am hearing here is that people don’t want to hear the same shows (a) during the week and (b) again in December. First off Greg does his best to play different blocks of shows in different time frames on different days. Now as GREAT of a job as he is doing, I find myself hearing Repeats. If I did not care for the show I changed the channel until the show is over and come back to 164 afterwards. I am sure Greg is not offended. He even mentions that on his show. He works for XM Radio and is a Team Player.

Now for the (b). People don’t want to hear the same shows that Greg may play in July and again in December. First off I am sure Greg has many Christmas show’s and he will keep the repeats down to only the BEST, and second, don’t we listen to Christmas songs OVER and OVER again every year. Those repeats far out weigh the repeats that you might hear on his Christmas special.

After reading ALL of these responses, I would be willing to have a 50/50 split of the week. But dedicate 1 full day to Christmas shows. I vote for Saturday. I would love to hear from you all on this Idea.. This is a great blog site for us all to get together and discuss these issues, and Greg will read this and take our ideas to make his already Great show better.
