by gregbell 5/19/2008 8:34:00 AM

Wow, the Christmas In July response is great! And to think until today (Monday 5/19) I hadn't even mentioned it on the air, so all of the comments are coming from folks who know this blog. That is wonderful. Keep 'em coming.

Direct link to this week's one page printable schedule http://www.xmradio.com/pdf/radioclassics_051908.pdf

Here's what's up on XM 164 this week - James - "we all still call him Jimmy" - Stewart would have been 100 (May 20th, 1908 - died July 2nd 1997) so two whole hours are dedicated to him. Here's the lineup; The Six Shooter - Gabriel Starbuck from November 22nd, 1953 co-starring Bill Johnstone; The Jack Benny Program with Jack and Jimmy poking fun at Stewart's film Bend of the River, then it is two radio versions of Stewart films - Call Northside 777 and Magic Town.

It begins on his birthday tomorrow (Tuesday 5/20) at Noon ET (11am CT, 10am MT, 9am PT) and plays again at 8pm ET (7pm CT, 6pm MT, 5pm PT).

Unlike many of these radio stars - you probably all know what he looks like but here is a picture anyway and the link to his hometown museum's website. www.jimmy.org

The other special running this week marks the birthday of Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle (Born May 22nd, 1859 - died July 7th, 1930).

Back to back Sherlock Holmes radio episodes that are both new this week to the channel. The first is from 1948 with John Stanley and Alfred Shirley, the second is from 1955 starring a couple of Knights, Sir John Gielgud and Sir Ralph Richardson. You can catch it later this week on Wednesday at 4pm ET (3pm CT 2pm MT 1pm PT) then two different times on Thursday. http://www.xmradio.com/pdf/radioclassics_051908.pdf

I truly enjoy the Six Shooter, and the suspense where he is a war vet. I think its called mission complete. A true outstanding actor.
On Sherlock Holmes, was there a portrayer named Tom Conway? I tend to remember one.

Tom Conway was another performer in Sherlock Holmes..
Many folks have portayed him over the years. Tom played in 1946-1947 after Basil Rathbone left. Tom looks like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Tom_Conway_in_Grand_Central_Murder_trailer.jpg
and you can read about Tom at his wiki page

John,
Thank you. If memory serves me correct, Tom was in a b movie the she-creature. Speaking of pictures, I will post also under the picture comments, I found a picture of Lon Clark, Nick Carter, and he is another who looks nothing like I picture.

Tom was also in the Falcon movies which I enjoyed, but not as much as The Saint movies with George Sanders Smile

There was a 1956 picture called DEATH OF A SCOUNDREL in which Sanders has his brother (played by Conway) arrested by the Czech police. Really nasty.

Greg,

Thanks for the Jimmy Stewart tribute. He's one of my all-time favorite actors. I visited his grave when I was out in L.A. because I knew it was the closest I would ever get to meeting the man.

Keep up the great work!

Greg, thanks for the Jimmy Stewart tribute! I was able to listen to the entire 2-hour Radio Classics tribute yesterday, then spent the evening watching "Rear Window" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" on TMC. Nice celebration of the birth of a great actor.

Keep up the good work!

You probably have little to no control over the advertising commercials on XM, but I'd like to see some changes effected soon. The ones with the buzzers are annoying, the ones with the theems about "What about the discount..." and the ones about "Go-to-meeting..." are somewhat old and annoying as well. I would think that your advertisers could be a bit more inventive. Hopefully the staff at XM could be more in tune to reality and honesty. It might help them attract more entertaining and changing advertisements to go along with the programming. There have to be some professionals working in this area that XM could use...

I've read all of the original Sherlock Holmes mysteries and simply love them! But I noticed that when SH is played on the radio, Watson is like so stupid. In the books, he was actually very bright and caught on to some of SH's methods. Not like he was 2nd SH or anything but he was not that dumb! Keep up the great work Greg!!
