Wiz of Oz, Mohr of Gerald and My Father's Picks

by gregbell 6/8/2008 7:46:00 PM

Hey gang we have a great week including many new-to-the-channel shows running on XM 164.

To honor Judy Garland's birthday (June 10th, 1922 - Died June 22nd, 1969) I will be playing a radio version of her 1939 classic motion picture, The Wizard of Oz as presented on a one-hour Lux Radio Theatre episode.

Speaking of birthdays, I am also playing a two-hour tribute to Gerald Mohr. He was born on June 11th, 1914 and died on November 9th, 1968. It opens with a great Suspense episode known as Short Order, then Mohr is Philip Marlowe. In the second hour he plays a villain in a radio version of the Bob Hope/Jane Russell western comedy film, The Paleface. And then he works alongside Jack Benny in the Suspense episode, A Good & Faithful Servant.

Finally since this week ends with Father's Day; I let my father, Dan Bell, pick two hours worth of episodes.  He chose Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, Tales of the Texas Rangers, The Six Shooter and Frontier Gentleman.

It was a cool thing you did letting your dad chose some radio shows for you. It does give us a small insight into his personality.

I have been a listener for a number of years and really rely on the printable schdules that you have. I do have one question is there any way to make the print bigger for us older people to read? or at the very least give us an option to print it in a bigger font? Thanks love the shows

Sounds like a great week coming up. Your DAD did an awsome job programing his 2 hours. I will look forward to hearing it. Happy Fathers day to your Dad Greg

John,

What I have found helpful for the small print problem is to use the graphics tool in Adobe Reader (the symbol looks like a little camera), select the schedule eliminating as much of the outside margin as possible, then choose the "fit to page" page option when printing. That has the effect of enlarging the whole schedule just enough for me to read it comfortably.

Greg, I love all the detail you manage to fit into the schedule these days. Thanks for making it available!

I just love Crime Classics. Did I hear Elliot Lewis (sp?) was the narrator? He can't be the same Elliot Lewis who plays Remly (sp?) on the Phil Harris and Alice Faye show is he? Thanks for making the weekend better!

LH,

Actually Elliott Lewis was the creator and producer/director of Crime Classics. The narrator "Thomas Hyland" was voiced by Lou Merrill. Lewis is the same guy who played Frankie Remley on PHil Harris and Alice Faye. He also was the producer/director of Broadway Is My Beat and for a time Suspense. He was really a multi-talented guy.

Hi Greg ;

Heard your Dad's two hours yesterday, and I highly approve. I guess I'm just a cowboy at heart. I grew up in the cowboy era. Gun smoke is my favorite.

Hi Greg. I heard you this morning telling about letting your dad pick some of the shows for this week. It made me think of my own, and wish that he was still around, because I have a feeling he'd love this channel and think it would've made the perfect gift for him... if he hadn't stolen my radio before now. made me a bit misty eyed for a while. I know I've said it before--along with a lot of other--but I'll say it again: Thanks for all of the hard work you do.

No thanks to you my wallet has been a little flat the last few weeks. hahaha. First it was the the X Minus One episode "... And the moon be still as bright". It made me remember that it had been ages since I had read "The Martian Chronicles" so I had to stop on the way home and buy it. Then half way through I remembered that I had been promising myself for 30 years that I would read "Fahrenheit 451".

Then after that little binge you had to go and play "The Kandy Tooth Caper" which reminded me that I'd never gotten around to reading "The Maltese Falcon" so I had to make another trip to the bookstore. Halfway through I also remembered that I'd never been able to see the Bogart version of the film all the way through, so I had to go buy that, which I watched, and then turned around and watched the 1931 original version which I had never seen, and barely heard of. Then, thank you very much, somewhere along the line you played "Philip Marlowe" or made some mention of the charater which drove me to the bookstore yet again.

I would tell you to stop, but the bookstore loves me, and I love 164 too much to stop listening, but if you keep up this pace I'm very soon going to be broke (although I am sure that the bookstore loves getting my money... are you on commission with them?).

Have a great weekend, and I can't wait to see what comes up next week Laughing

Yours truly,
Scott

John, I am registered at GBravatar and have my picture up there. It worked the first 2 weeks but only get this empty head now. I checked my profile there and it still has my picture but it is not showing on my comments. Any thoughts as to what is wrong.

Thanks

love the programming this week. i really enjoy Gerald Mohr... he DOES look like Bogie like you said! And he shares a bday with my sister. Thanks to Dan for the great programming. Those are my favorites too! Nicely done, Greg's dad! Happy Father's day to you! and to you too, Greg! Aren't you a daddy? I can't remember, and I hope I didn't just embarrass myself.

I just wonder what hours your Dad is up to listen to his picks. They were all, but 1, aired very early in the day. Is he listening from Greenland?

Happy Father's Day to all.

The more that I listen to the old Gunsmoke episodes, the more that I like them. If there is going to be a Christmas in July series, could we at least have the night before and after the All Star game for Cowboys and Detectives?

I vaguely remember Lou Merrill from movies, so looked him up on the net and there's a pic of Elliot Lewis with Crime Classics--he's multi-talented and good-looking too! Also checked on Ernie Pyle, what a guy...

I hope you keep your fascination with old-time radio. I am addicted to channel 164. You do a fantastic job introducing the shows/actors.

Gunsmoke plays some controversial social issues for the time period, and Doc's tunes are pretty jaunty! I agree it's a show that gets better the more I listen.

As is true of most of the shows! (:

To Bill Lawrence

My father first heard his picks at 10am ET on Monday - don't have to be in Greenland for that. Here are some other times it aired this week that are perfectly reasonable times;

2pm ET (11am PT) on Wednesday 10pm ET (7pm PT) on Friday Night and (2pm ET 11am PT) tomorrow, Father's Day. So I really don't understand what you are seeing.

Greg.

Thanks for the info.. It is so interesting that "stories" that flew through the air (radio waves) more than 50, 60 and 70 years ago are now beaming back down to us via sattelite.. I wonder how the provider finds them.. There must be some radio treasure troves hidden away.. No DVR's then.. Again Thanks.. Be sure to keep we Left Coasters in mind for your scheduling..

Our new car had XM Radio installed. On our way home from the dealership my wife said "you're going to love this." Of couse it was channel 164. I just love listening to the radio shows I grew up with. Your comments at the end of each show add to the enjoyment are most informative. Keep up the great programing and I look forward to even more listeners with the new Sirius XM Radio network.

Greg, hi! By chance I came across your blog mentioning Gerald Mohr. I run a website in his honour and memory at www.lindawood.bravehost.com and am starting up a new website, www.geraldmohr.biz, in a couple of weeks' time to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his sad and sudden demise on 9 November 1968 in Stockholm. One of the primary objects of my new website will be to get Gerald a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame under the Radio category for his 500+ radio shows and his iconic performances as Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. I'm also interested in hearing from anyone who met or worked with him and has recollections they would wish to impart - this will be another page in my new website. Oh, and he really didn't look like Bogie - the photo you displayed was deliberately made to make him resemble Bogie for publicity reasons, but Gerald was tall, dark and very handsome! See them together in a scene from the movie Sirocco and you'll see what I mean! If any fellow-bloggers agree that Gerald should have a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, please feel free to contact me.
