MERGER

by gregbell 7/26/2008 5:43:00 AM

By a 3 to 2 vote, the FCC approved the merger of XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio last night (Friday). Here is a link to the story.

 http://money.cnn.com/2008/07/25/technology/sirius_xm_approval.ap/index.htm?postversion=2008072522

As to how this impacts your favorite channel (and MINE), I have absolutely no idea. I certainly am confident that it's popularity and loyal listenership will keep it safe from any negative changes.

If I learn anything in the near future, I will let you know here on the blog and on the air as well.

Greg.

Just saw the story and have sent my email to XM in support of my favorite host and favorite channel! When I first decided to get a satelitte radio I checked out both companies and what they had to offer. XM's OTR radio was and is so much better. Please let us know Greg if we can do anything else to help us all keep you and these wonderful programs on the air.

Hi Greg,
I also will email XM on keeping things with your programs and telling them to leave it alone.
When i signed up for Sat radio about 3 years ago I had both XM and the Sirius receivers.
After about a month of both, I went with XM.
Better all around programming and with you on the radio classics shows there is no comparison.
Let us know what the best way to send a concern.
Where and what to say if it will help.
We don't want to rock the boat only if needed.
Keep up the great work Greg!

Hi! I sent my Email to the aforementioned XM Radio pleading with them to keep Ch. 164 once the merger goes through. I thought Sirius and XM Radio had basically the same OTR; if I'm wrong, I apologize profusely. If I find the patron saint of OTR, I'll pray to him or her and beg him or her to intercede so that Ch. 164 stays on the air. It sure beats HOWARD STERN!!!!! But then, even Hillary Clinton would do that!

Will email also.... we have both XM and Sirius and there is no comparison ... XM and Greg rock. As a Chicagoan, I spent years listening to Chuck Shaeden (sp?) and his OTR program. When that ended, we missed it so much. 164 has been a godsend. My husband and I are devoted listeners!!!!

Dick Powell is my Boyfriend!

Oh, what would we do without Greg Bell and the endlessly varied and entertaining programming on 164?!? It hardly bears considering!

Please pardon me whilst I go let xm know what this paying customer has to say...

Greg,
I am hoping and praying the people at Sirius are smart enough to keep you. I don't care for the way they do their schedule. I like the way you shuffle yours and the trivia you provide.

Channel 164 is one of the main reasons I have XM. I was anxious from the moment the merger was announced that the channel would change. Please, Greg, let us know what we can do as listeners to keep our channel exactly as it has always been. It's not just the content, but the interesting asides you present that make the channel unique.

Greg,
Please let us know if there is anything we can do to keep 164 and you on our radios. Channel 164 is the main reason I went with XM in the first place. Best wishes, Doris Benson

Greg, 164 is an amazing and fun channel.. We had gone up to the mountains for the weekend where you have to use sattelites to get TV or radio.. Thunderstorms.. and you guessed it, sattelite TV went out but my handy-dandy litle traveling XM radio provided us with great entertainment. It was almost caveman- like as we all sat around the radio like those around an ancient campfire.. listening to stories.. 164 gets/keeps the imagination going.. Thanks..

Along with my email to XM I also emailed Sirius. They sent me the following response. Everyone might want to send them an email also.

We are forwarding your suggestions about the Old Time Radio to the programing department for consideration in keeping this channel as part of the line-up.

This email is making me very nervous.

Greg, I'll add another plea for keeping you and your OTR channel intact and on the air. We looked at Sirius' programming when we first decided to get satellite radio, and were very UNimpressed. XM had much more of what we wanted, and ch. 164 was at the top of the list. I would have to guess that about 90% of our listening time is spent on 164. Take away my XM Radio Classics, and they'll lose a subscriber quicker than you can say, "Bob's your uncle!"

Can someone post the best email addresses to use for sending both XM and Sirius a message about the programming?

Greg's performance and creativity in managing OTR here and in his other endeavors has likely assured no negative changes for our beloved 164. My hope is that not only can we preserve OTR, but through the direction and guidance of fans of the art form like Greg, we can get even MORE. I'd like to see SEVERAL OTR channels... drama, comedy, mystery, detective and variety channels. Plus, more NEW radio plays similar to what we hear on 163, only of a higher production value (like Twighlight Zone and Harry Nile).

Hi Greg...
Just emailed the powers tha be at XM in support of you, your programming and the insight you bring.
Told them for whatever reason if you were gone, me and my back account would follow suit.

Kyle, to email XM go to their website and scroll to bottom of page. There is a link for "Contact Us". Sirius makes you work a little harder, on their site you have to go to Help section at bottom of home page. You will get a contact us section after that.
Hope this helps!

Yes Greg, let us know specifically where we can lend our support. My dealings with Customer Service at XM have not always been a pleasant experience, so I doubt by me calling or emailing one of them, they will pass my concerns about keeping 164 and yourself on my radio.

Greg do you know how the numbers stack up between the Sirius and XM OTR channels? I would not be able to get into the non-host, set schedule of the Sirius format.

Mel Karmazin will be on Opie & Anthony today (Wednesday)sometime during their 9am (Eastern) hour. I like O&A, but I know some of you may not, however this may be a good way to hear some of the plans for moving forward.

I would be lost with XM 164! I have a mini tuner connected to my stereo receiver in my bedroom and via an FM transmitter have XM 164 all over the house! I listen in the kitchen while preparing meals, or doing house cleaning, and even have a radio in the bathroom! You might say I am a devoted listener to the channel! I sincerely hope the merger does not affect this channel. Keep it just like it is! I love all the tidbits of trivia Greg provides in between shows. I have learned a lot about Old Time Radio and have even started my own collection.

Greg:
While I do enjoy OTR 164 and very much support keeping it on Sirius/XM..I wish the scheduling would be a bit different at times. I find that if I listen to something early in the week, no matter when I listen later on the same program always seems to show up..LOL..I always thought it would be nice to do block specials with a specific date in mind..Like say (just throwing a date out there,,August 5, 1951 or something along that line)..I realize rights issues come into play so the scheduling is problably the best you can do all in all..Thanks for the good effort, Greg..

It'll be a long time, probably, before the XM/Sirius merger is complete. I'm only hoping XM's BEST station will remain - Ch. 164, of course. And I hope Greg continues on at the new station --- he is an absolute FONT of information. His informing us has piqued my interest - I want to learn MORE about OTR. And I love the pictures on the blog. Fibber McGee and Molly looked pretty much as I expected but Bill Johnstone looks different (and good!). I know Gale Gordon and Eve Arden from their long work on TV. And who could NOT know Orson Welles (Wells?), who was so handsome as a young man.
I turn my radio on just before bed and I leave it on all night long. If I wake up in the night, it's nice to hear the shows. But I have to be careful if it's science fiction at 1 AM --- it still scares the bejeeeeeezus out of me --- but I love it!
Good luck with the "negotitations," Greg and GOD BLESS!

164 is BY FAR my most listened to channel. Channel 4 is good for later in the week when I have already heard everything! Also, I will say I love having ALL major league baseball games available. So post-merger I hope Radio Classics stays in its present format!!!
