Schedule for the 1st week of September - Superman reminder!

by gregbell 8/26/2008 2:54:00 PM

Okay first of all, if you are a "Man of Steel Marathon" fan a new Superman storyline is running over the weekend. It begins Friday at 8pm ET 7 CT then on late Saturday night for all of you West Coast folks (or really late night East Coasters) it will air at 11pm Pacific Time (2am ET) - then again on Sunday morning 8am ET and finally on Monday Labor Day at 2pm ET (11am PT). After the 90 minute special I have added a "new" episode of The Chase.

Clayton "Bud" Collyer - Superman/Clark Kent                Jimmy Stewart

Okay a new schedule is ready for the first week of September and it is attached right here in Excel format.

RadioClassics Grid 2008-09-01 Wk-Landscape.xls (28.50 kb)

Highlights include a Lux Radio Version of Winchester '73, "new' episodes from Alan Young, Frank Race, The Chase, Richard Diamond, This Is Your FBI, Suspense, Inner Sanctum, Mysterious Traveler, etc.

You might really enjoy yet another new show known as Behind The Mike. Just like it sounds you'll learn about actors, sound effects, transcription vs recording and much more from this program that first aired back in 1940.

Greg.

Hey Greg, you played one of my favorite Suspense episodes last week-The House in Cypress Canyon. You mentioned it was one of the most requested Suspense episodes with a couple of others. One I was surprised wasn't listed in one of the most requested is my very favorite episode of Suspense and was one that was aired early on in its run with Orson Wells: the Hitchhiker. There is something spine-tingling about that tale no matter how often I hear it. Any chance we could get that played sometime close to Halloween? Perhaps paired with the annual airing of War of the Worlds? That would be great.

Matt,

Great idea! We are going to be LOADED with Orson, because I am considering his Mercury Theatre version of Dracula as well.

Thanks.

Hi, Greg! SO glad to learn of the Superman marathon. I've always been a Superman fan - whether it be radio, TV or the movies --- even the cartoons. I love DC Comics in general.
An Orson Marathon of sorts in October??? Oh man that is something to LIVE FOR!!! Seriously, I think Orson Welles has one of the sexiest voices I've ever heard. So I'm thrilled by that, too.
Here's a bit of trivia about Bud Collyer. In addition to being Superman and being host of "Truth Consequences" and ther game shows, he also was an author and a devout Episcopalian. I kow about the latter because my best friend in all the world gave me Mr. Collyer's book of prayers and I still have it (the book, not the friend --- he passed away more than 20 years ago). By the way, I like the new shows - some more than others, of course. I LOVE Judy Canova; I think she's really funny. Alan Young --- well, I can take that or leave it. Everyone remembers him from "Mr. Ed" but I also remember him as the Scottish friend of the time traveler in the 1960's version of "The Time Machine." Right now, I'm listening to "Gunsmoke" - the story of the unattractive man. Very, very good episode.

Great Krypton! A Superman Marathon! I'll definitely be listening on Friday night! I'm a comic book fan as well as a comic book writer and artist and I love the Superman radio show. Bud Collyer had a perfect voice for both Superman and Clark Kent. Here's some trivia that Greg might have mentioned in his introductions ...but if not, feel free to use them, Greg! The Superman radio show made many contributions to the Superman mythology. Superman's super-weakness, Kryptonite, was first introduced on the radio show and Superman first met Batman on the radio before they ever teamed up in the comics. The classic phrase "Up, up and away..." was devised for the radio show as a mean of conveying the image of Superman taking off across the non-visual medium of radio. Similarly, the phrase "This is a job... for Superman!" was used to illustrate the image of Superman changing from Clark Kent. Collyer would read the "This is a job..." part in his high Clark Kent voice and then drop to Superman's deeper voice for "...for Superman!" One more thing... Bud Collyer returned to the Superman role in the 1960's for a series of Saturday morning Superman cartoons buy Filmation. I still hear that voice in my head whenever I'm reading Superman comics!

Rosemary:
Collyer Hosted Beat The Clock and To Tell The Truth but never Truth Or Consequences. Joan Alexander, The Lois Lane of the Superman Radio series and Movie and 60's TV Cartoons can now be seen in her one regular TV program appearance. The 1951-55 ABC Game Show "The Nanes The Same" (weeknights 3:30 AM ET) with Robert Q. Lewis. She is absolutely stunning..Amazing she didnt do more tv or movie acting.. Other Radio veterans, including Bill Cullen, Bill Stern and Meredith Willson, were panelists on this show at one time or another..Bob and Ray ven hosted Name's The Same for about 11 weeks later in the run..

Thanks, Tim, for the "trivia" on Bud Collyer. I'm in my 50s so I remember him but I didn't watch many game shows. I actually loved Jack Narz from "Beat the Clock." PBS had a program on game shows and Mr. Narz was included. Truthfully, I didn't even know he was still alive. Do you also remember a show called "Camouflage" where contestants had to find a figure hidden in a picture? It was a neat show.
SO I guess you're a superman fan if you plan to stay up for the Marathon. I"m really looking forward to it. Did you ever purchase any of the Superman shows from Radio Spirits? I love them. Have fun - I know I shall!

For Matt Pelc, the writer who loves "The House in Cypress Canyon," it took me a wee bit of time to "get" that one but once I did, you're right - it's a knock-out. But I also must tell you, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Robert Taylor. That man could have read the phone book and I'd have been enthralled!
One of my favorite "Suspense" episodes is "Fugue in C-Minor" with Ida Lupino and Vincent Price. That one was downright SCARY; Vincent Price was so deliciously CREEPY! I also love the Arch Obeler "goodies" "Revolt of the Worms" and "Meteor Man" (the 1st time I heard "Meteor Man," I was drifting off to sleep but still listening and it scared me so much I had to TURN IT OFF!!! And I'm a grown woman!).
Now I'm curious --- what other episodes on Radio Classics do "y'all" like --- and doesn't Greg do a fantastic job? He is just terrific!

Thats ok Rosemary. Didnt want to come across as a "Know it all" there..I am a Superman Fan, though I havent heard as much of the radio series as I would like. I do have all 17 Fleischer/Famoua Movie Cartoons with Bud Collyer/Joan Alexander and the first two seasons of the 1950's George Reeves Superman TV series on DVD.

Just one more thing on "The Name's The Same" with Joan Alexander..I neglected to mention the show is aired on Game Show Network.

Hi, Tim! Boy, you really know your game shows - that's cool. Tom Kennedy and Jack Narz are brothers? Different dads or are they like Peter Graves and Jim Arness - taking different names in the same career? I always liked "Jeopardy," both with Art Fleming and Alex Trebek. Did you ever see the PBS program on game shows? It was fascinating. And I must watch "Quiz Show," the Robert Redford-directed movie about the early game show scandals (I'd watch that mainly to see Paul Scofield in one of his last performances).
My sister got me the 1st season of the 1950s "Superman" series - it includes the 2-parter with "the Mole Men" - the 3 little men who come up from the center of the Earth through an oil well. You bet I'll listen to the marathon some time over the weekend. I love this channel and what Greg is doing; it's so much fun and the shows are so terrific! I hope you enjoy the marathon as much as I shall! Take care - Rosemary
PS: Do you like TV's "Perry Mason" and have you heard the few radio ones Greg has played? I think he's having trouble finding this show but I hope he keeps trying; it really was good - the one episode I heard him play.

John, I live in north Jersey and I'd like some more info on the Friends of Old Time Radio convention. Is it going to be held in Newark?

Attention, Greg and all my fellow Superman fans, I'd like to recommend the book, SUPERMAN VS HOLLYWOOD. It's a non-fictional look at the history of the Man of Steel's many adaptations into non-comics media. It begins with the radio show and the two Kirk Alyn serials. It goes into the George Reeves TV series, the cartoons, and then finally the films culminating with the most recent one. It's a very interesting look at all the behind-the-scenes machinations that went into producing all of these adaptations. It even looks at the unsuccessful adaptations that never took off like the 50's Superpup pilot featuring Superman as a dog and the Nicholas Cage movie of the 19990's. It's a very compelling book. If you love Superman, you'll find this to be one of those books that's difficult to put down.

Greetings All, I guess by now we have all heard the announcements on 164 stating that on some Saturdays we may be preempted for College football. This saddens me but lets face it XM/Sirius Radio is in the business to make money and College Football will make money, not for the family value it will bring, not for rooting for your alma mater and not for listening to a good College game. It will make money because the gamblers who bet on these games will be listening. I would have to say that 80% (and I am being conservative here) will have money on the game that they will be listening too. Yes it’s sad but a true fact all the same

Yes I have sent in my e-mail stating that I want my 164 free of these games so that I can listen to these wonderful stories. But it will do no good, because we don’t BET on these stories, just enjoy them. Yesterday I spent the whole day painting with my friends Benny, Det. Friday, Suspense, The Whisper, The Whistler, and many others. They made the day and the chore fly by.

My friends, we will just have to bite the bullet and endure this thru the College season. Greg, I apologize for this rant.

Rosemary, Fugue in C Minor is another one of my favorites. I was introduced to Fugue, Cypress and the Hitchiker in the Best of Suspense audio cassettes I collected a few years back.

Rosemary, even though I love Cypress I still never get the ending. The real estate agent is reading the letter from the tormented husband, so why doesn't he get startled when that same man and his wife come in to see the house? I have never gotten that part, but have loved the-well suspense of that Suspense epsiode nonetheless!

Don't forget ... http://www.lofcom.com/nostalgia/fotr/ ... for the schedule of
the Friends of Old Time Radio convention in Newark, NJ, Oct 23 - 26, 2008.
Lots of Special Guest connected with OTR or old time TV.

There are lots of dealers selling tapes, CDs, etc. In the past few years,
however, the various vendors of OTR tapes and CDs have shifted towards old
time TV/Movie DVDs. Still worth the visit.
