Thanksgiving and Superman

by gregbell 11/23/2008 7:54:00 PM

Welcome to the week of giving thanks. Coming up the usual Turkey Day offerings from the great comedy series from the Golden Age including a special two hours of Jack Benny running this week. Also I have brought back yet another "Man of Steel Marathon" for the extended holiday weekend. It's a three week storyline from September of 1947 compressed into three and a half hours or so. Not only will it run on XM 164, but also on Sirius Radio Classics 118. It begins at 8pm ET Thanksgiving night with encores on Saturday 11/29 at 2pm ET and Sunday 11/30 at 6pm ET

Thanks Greg, I am always in the mood for some Superman! Playing on Sirius? Congrats! From what I hear about that channel, your presence there will be appreciated! As always, keep up the good work.

Greg, so pleased that you and XM 164 have survived the merger! I truly appreciated your comments aired and Midnight last night Eastern time kicking off this week of Thanksgiving.

May we have many many more together, our little OTR family!

I'm a proud member (I hope) of this "little radio family"; I'm certainly a devoted fan!
Thanks for the Superman marathon - I missed the last one; the one day I cold hear it was a day when the station was off the air for college football. So I'm really looking forward to this marathon.
If I don't get back to this blog again, let me wish you, Greg, your wife and daughters a wonderful Thanksgiving. "God bless" - Rosemary

Hey - Has anyone noticed a resemblance between Clayton "Bud" Collyer of radio "Superman" fame and George Reeves of the 1950s TV "Superman" show? Is this coincidence or was George Reeves chosen because of his resemblance to Bud Collyer? Just curious...

Hey Greg, thanks for the Thanksgiving edition of Suspense, "Screaming Woman." Suspense was really the first radio show that brought me into Old Time Radio. I heard it on When Radio Was way back when it was hosted by Art Fleming. I bought the Best of Tapes and the MP3 version of the complete series before I got XM. The one thing I noticed is that a lot of the episodes are pretty much the same, kind of a "murder of the week" type thing, but the ones I like the most such as the Hitchhiker, Fugue in C Minor, Screaming Woman and a few others depart from the usual formula and have another aspect to it which make them very enjoyable.

The poster is from Bangor, Maine? WLBZ is where my sister is GM. I guess it would only make sense that it was a radio station first. Cool. Peggy (large marge in MI)

Greg I hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving. I am thrilled you and OTR survived the merger. Some other hosts did not fair as well (like John van Soustain on the Broadway channel. I loved his show). The Benny marathon was awesome. Now how are we going to work the Christmas shows this year? LOL. Let the debate begin. Love the job your doing Greg.

Kudos to ROSEMARY for saying out loud what many
of us were thinking: that losing Radio Classics
and Greg Bell was a real possibility we dreaded,
and we're all majorly relieved that 164 and Greg
are still here! The "Family" feeling in many of
these shows is very hard to find today.

Greg, you asked for feedback about the format you used to air continuing segments of a Superman storyline (that originally aired over several weeknights for 2 weeks or so) all in one night rather than spreading them out over time. My response is: I LOVED it. Makes it so much easier to follow the story's thread and to be honest, (and I'm not proud of this), but I AM a product of our immediate gratification nation, so this way I don't have to wait to hear the conclusion!
Love your programming---especially the suspense, horror and detective stories Smile

Not only is that a bad picture of Jack (Good News, Bangor!), but they spelled Mary's last name wrong!

Greg, just want to say thanks for all your old time radio programs. I love all of them, the westerns, the comedies, the suspense and mysteries. I listen every day whenever I can; even hear some of them numerous times during the week but love them. Also, thanks for the old pictures. I just love them all. Hope you have a great 2009!
