Is there a particular reason you have never aired Amos and Andy? I know in today's climate it might be considered controversial but it is also one of the funniest shows I have ever heard. I know the show is public domian but I don't know if that has any effect on commerical broadcast. I hope everyone could see the show for what is was intended and not find any offense. Thanks!

As a white boy in the 50s, I lived in Kentucky. I saw "White/Colored" signs over drinking fountains, went to a segregated grade school, and occasionally watched "Amos and Andy" on TV (black and white, of course). I wonder if you could find a radio show that places "Amos and Andy" in context while playing some of the actual radio shows.

Now that I think about it, I remember that the radio actors of "Amos and Andy" were white. I also don't know that I have ever listend to a full radio "Amos and Andy" show and all my conceptions are based on the TV show.

I too have often wondered why you never played "Amos & Andy" and I agree with you about good arguments on both sides of this controversy.
However, you play "The Lone Ranger" and a children's show (whose name I have fogotten because I don't like it) with stereotpical Indian characters (Tonto, of course, and a boy who speaks with an annoying gramatically incorrect dialect)
And on "Have Gun Will Travel," a show I really like, you have "Hey Boy" and "Miss Wong" and they are both stereotypical Chinese characters. They could be considered as offensive and politically incorrect to Native- and Asian-Americans as A&A might be to African-Americans. If you were super sensitive about every show with an ethnic character, you probably wouldn't have much to offer. Oh, and what about "Life With Luigi" and all its ethnic characters? J. Carroll Naish was an Irish actor but he had the Italian accent down pat. And there were other stereotypes in LWL, too. It's a real condundrum, I'm sure but it's kind of not fair to deprive many people who might enjoy A&A because of the (understandable) sensitivity of one group. And how about women? Recently you played an episode of "Father Knows Best" (The one where Margaret and Betty want a car and are told they have to take care of it - including mechanically) that bordered on misogynistic if you ask me and I'm not even a Feminist. That episode really baked my beans!
Finally, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson is also a stereotypical character. He's an African-American man who portrays Jack Benny's valet. I've heard that after Jack Benny learned about the Holocaust, he changed Rochester from being a valet and servant to being a necessary part of "The Gang." That was a good decision but I still like Rochester whether he's a valet or just another gang member.
He was just plain funny and his skin color had nothing to do wsith it. He was a talented, gifted man and he made the most of what he had and what was given to him.
The late, great Hattie McDaniel, when she was asked if she wasn't insulted and humilitated at having to play servants and maids, said: It's better to play one than to be one." And she proved it by winning the 1939 Academy Award for her wonderful portrayal of "Mammy" in "Gone With The Wind."

CBS owns the copyright and trademark to AMOS 'N ANDY and, to date, have not done any licensing. All of the radio and tv episodes now being sold are bascially grey market. With respect to Greg's comment about the difference between the tv and radio versions - when CBS first decided to bring AMOS 'N ANDY to television it was their intention to do so with white actors in blackface. There were closed-circuit auditions of dozens of actors (including Maurice Manson) as Amos, Andy and Kingfish. I've seen kinescopes of these auditions and they are more than bizarre. Thankfully, wiser heads prevailed and the tv show was populated with an outstanding roster of well-known black actors (including wonderful Amanda Randolph).

Amos and Andy (Freeman Gosden, Charles Correll) atarred in a 1930 Movie, "Check and Double Check." Amazingly, this movie was shown at 3AM one morning on WAKR-TV 23 in Akron, Ohio during their all night movies in the early 1980's..I happened to see it then. The writing was good..like an extended radio episode,Greatt music by Duke Ellington, among others..While I like The Amos and Andy Radio Show, seeing Gosden and Correll in Blackface made me feel a bit uncomfortable..There were also 2 animated A@A Cartoons about 1934..Gosden and Correll laid down the audio tracks before seeing the finished animation..When they did, they were offended at the exaggeratated look the Van Beuren Studios gave to their characters..Subsequently, they voided the contract after 2 cartoons were made..

Although it looks as if SiriusXM is going to go into bankruptcy, it does appear that even if it does it would be under a re-org plan rather than a liquidation. Which means SiriusXM should be able to continue broadcasting. I would hate to think that this economy would end the great satellite radio experiment. i have to believe there IS a market for this and i hope it can survive to one day flourish.

As owner of SiriusXM I would much rather see a buyout (ECHOSTAR WHERE ARE YOU?), even if only for 3-5 cents a share, vs getting nothing for my thousands and thousands of shares.

I live in southern Louisiana so I can understand how people can be offended by old sterotypes. We southern are all slow and married to our sisters/brothers. Haha I just find the whole world getting more and more uptight about this kind of thing. We need to remember to take everything in context. Amos and Andy was a reflection of its time not today. One of the things I really like about old time radio is that it gives you a snap shot of an earlier America. Some things were better then some are better now. I have some Amos and Andy on disc and enjoy listening to the humorous situations they get themselves into. I do think the world would be much beter off if we would laugh more and not take everything so seriously.

I have been so worried we might lose Sirius XM Radio! I was told going into bankruptcy merely means reorganization but I'm still apprehensive. In this dismal economy, anything you have to pay for aside from food, medicine, clothing and fuel might be considered a luxury item. People in a bad economy won't buy any unnecessary thing because those items are considered superfluous. However, for this particular person, Sirius XM Radio isn't superfluous, it's ESSENTIAL! So I hope the powers-that-be at Sirius XM Radio will find a way out of the financial quagmire and will continue ofering the wonderful channels, shows and hosts (that's YOU, Greg). I admit I listen to classical music, the Catholic stations and the music of the 60s and 70s (I grew up with the music of these 2 decades and I'm also a "cradle Catholic"), as well as some news channels. But my heart belongs to Ch. 164 and I have NO Plans of changing nor will I let it go without a FIGHT. I may be little (less than 5 feet tall) but I can be MEAN!

This may be my last commentary on the A&A controversy. Patty was right when she said we should stop taking everything (ourselves in particular) so seriously. She also was right when she said A&A are funny because of the situations in which they found themselves, not because they were black, or white, or whatever.
My mother had a book titled "Parisonls Is For Ladies," about a dirt-poor farmer father, his wife and their 3 little girls. The father wanted to buy his daughters parisols and the book - a children's book - told this story. The family is black. There is stereotype all through the book. And you know what? At the ripe old age of 55, it remains one of my favorite books; it sits proudly on my bookshelf and I'm so happy it didn't get lost as I progressed through childhood (or at least I think I've progressed but that's another subject entirely). Why? Because it tells the story of 2 parents who wanted to give their daughters something special despite being deseperately poor. That's universal - skin color isn't relevant if you have parents who love their children.

Hi Greg, You talked about trying to run serials like Superman on consecutive days in the same time slot like Sirius listeners are used to. If you do, could you still run them a couple of times as a marathon, for those of us who can't listen every day?

Also, besides telling Sirius listeners about the schedule, you might tell them more about the 2 hour blocks. When I don't have a schedule with me, I make sure I'm in the car at the beginning of a block.

I'm very pleased you survived the merger and hope you also survive the current company difficulties.

Can you do something about the difference in volume of the commercials and promos. The programs tend to be low and then I'm blasted out of the bed by what follows. At 3am that can be a real shocker. Love 164 and keep it on all night long (as you can see I'm the worst sleeper in the world).

If it makes any difference , many of the cast members of Amos & Andy were black actors , including Eddie Green who played Eddie the waiter on Duffy's Tavern . I have a book on OTR which shows a picture of the cast of Amos & Andy and there are more black actors than white .

I would like to hear those shows because they are funny and a vital part of history of OTR . As I understand it , Amos & Andy was the highest rated radio show of them all , ahead of Jack Benny or anybody else .

I am not much of a guy who thinks in so deeply about web design but I think your post had some valid points in it. Like designers are forced to design stuff within the limited code available and not go beyond it, their innovation is somewhat limited but still I think Web Design won't die! I am not much of a guy who thinks in so deeply about web design but I think your post had some valid points in it. Like designers are forced to design stuff within the limited code available and not go beyond it, their innovation is somewhat limited but still I think Web Design won't die! I agree that Amazon and other some big sites won't have a blog but now a days it's very important to have some sort of option available so people can quickly communicate their thoughts. I think Amazon if wants to shift it to that, they can get a customized CMS for themselves.
