This Week's Schedule, Firefox Issues and The Future of Sirius XM Radio

by gregbell 2/19/2009 4:36:00 PM

First of all while the new schedule has been available for a couple of days now on the schedule page, for convenience here is a link to both versions;

RC Feb. 22nd, 2009-Feb. 28th, 2009 - PDF Version.pdf (65.09 kb)

RC Feb. 22nd, 2009-Feb. 28th, 2009 - Excel Version (21.00 kb)

For months now there has been an ongoing problem with this blog site and Firefox browsers as they have worked sporadically or even been totally unable to access the blog. Well I believe we have finally fumigated the bugs and it seems to be working just fine now, so Firefox fans (I use it myself) you can use your favorite browser now on this site.

I am sure most of you have heard by now, but if not for the big news about Sirius XM Radio click here

I'm really very easy to please! Keep XM/Sirius Radio - especially Ch. 164 Radio Classics - on the air and I'm happy. I figure the economy, world events and even crooked politics (no, gang, that is NOT an oxymoron!) will take care of themselves. But if there is no XM/Sirius Radio (and, therefore, no Radio Classics), the world as I know it will come crashing down around me like Mount Vesivius in 79 AD (sometimes I feel old enough to remember that monumentous event).
Your other writer was right, Greg - you definitely are underpaid. You are so talented, entertaining and interesting with your facts, information and even trivia that this is what makes Old Time Radio so enjoyable. Keep up the marvelous work!
By the way, I LOVED the Jack Benny Show today --- especially the ending, when Mary hauled off and belted Jack but you didn't realize it until Mr. Paley said SHE shouldn't have done that because he wears glasses. And, of course, Frank Nelson as the waiter always makes any show he does even more enjoyable. You must tell us more about him (if you haven't already) -- he's a very funny man. I remember him from several episodes of "I Love Lucy."
More later. Take care, Gang!

Glad to see that Firefox works (although I don't see my Gravatar) and the bucks came to Sirius/XM. Now can you do something about the economy thing?

Greg - I think your'e underpaid. At least you provide us some excellent entertainment!

By the way, Greg - thank you for the tribute to Gale Gordon! I loved the episodes of "Our Miss Brooks" and "The Halls of Ivy." I'd heard the OMB episode before (though I still enjoy it because I'm a big fan of Eve Arden and "Our Miss Brooks") and the Fibber McGee & Molly episode. But I hadn't heard the "Halls of Ivy" episode --- I always thought Ronald Colman (HUBBA HUBBA with that voice of his) and Benita Colman had been the original and only stars of that series. How nice to be wrong!
On to another subject - do you, Greg, or does anyone else know if Radio Spirits has a CD of Old Time Radio music? I love the theme music of "Gunsmoke," "Have Gun, Will Travel," "Suspense" and "The Whistler" and it would be so nice to have a CD of the theme music and lead-in quotes. Can you pass this idea on to the powers that be at Radio Spirts?
Also, finally, Greg ... request time --- I always liked the show "I Was a Communist for the FBI" with Dana Andrews (another HUBBA UBBA on my increasingly long list of Hubba Hubbas). It may seem dated now but I remember the Cold War very well and though it's long over, it should not be forgotten. Just a request and a small suggestion ...I'd like you to bring back more episodes of this show. I really do enjoy it. Take care, Greg, and , as always, THANK YOU and GOD BLESS!

Rosemary ... you sound like me. I find Radio Classics takes me away from the days cares and lets my mind drift back in time. I remember as a kid getting a crystal radio set and sitting up late into the night next to the radiator by the window, because you had to use an alligator clip on metal to pick up a signal. That night was bliss-death and I have cherished the thought for 50 years now. So 50 years later, I spend my nights listening to that era brought back to me via satelite. It is almost surreal!!

Thanks Greg, I am a Firefox user too, it is so much easier to use than Explorer. I used to have to toggle to my Explorer to see the site and eventually I downloaded something that allowed me to right click to view it in an IE tab and that seemed to work. But imagine my surprise when it worked today without having to right click!

Thanks, keep up the good work.

Rosemary, I also love Gunsmoke's opening theme and the music that transitions it from the opening theme to the first act and from where the old commercials would be. The music was what I brought me into listening to Gunsmoke and it has become my favorite OTR show.

I have a question for Greg or anyone else who can answer it. Why was Chester not Matt's deputy? Early on, in the first Christmas episode of the series, Matt is stuck out of Dodge on Christmas Eve and he is regaling tales of Dodge to a man he meets along the way. He refers to Chester as his deputy in that episode, but a few years later Matt is bringing a prisoner back via stage coach and Chester is there and the con says something like, "Isn't that you deputy there?"

And Matt says, "He's not my deputy."

To which the convict replies, "well he sure acts like it."

Matt concludes the conversation with, "Yes he does, doesn't he?"

He does act like a deputy, I just wondered why, for the most part, he was not referred to as one.

The other thing that puzzles me about Gunsmoke is the opening where William Conrad, as Matt, says the job makes a man "a little loney." But he is surrounded by Kitty, Doc and Chester who are great friends to him, so it can't be TOO lonely with three great friends.

Greg, if you move to a new site, any chance at adding some message boards? This topic would be great there!

Just my opinion..I rhink the "Little Lonely" statement refers to Matt feeling possibly the entirre weight of "being the Law" in Dodge City..Meaning he has to make all the tough decisions, whether to shoot or arrest a lawbreaker, or be involved in a domestic dispute, etc..Since he officialy had no "deputy", being the One to decide everything must have weighed on him quite a bit..

Rosemary, you are correct, "crooked politics" is NOT an oxymoron; it's redundant.

Very pleased that SIRI has staved off BK, for now anyway. A few months breathing room may help to squelsh the need to file, although it is still unclear to me how SIRI will be able to handle the next round of loans coming due and remain intact.

I am praying though!

I just wanted to thank you for the great programming on Radio Classics. It makes my hour plus commute into work bearable and the rotating schedule ensures I hear a variety of shows. I was born in the seventies so I missed the golden age of radio, but I’m really enjoying it so far and the info you provide on the actors between shows is great. I did originally get Sirius to listen to Howard Stern, but I find myself listening more and more to Radio Classics. I especially enjoy The Shadow, The Whistler, X Minus One, and Suspense. Thanks, again.

Hi Greg;
It's great to hear that XM will be around for awhile, I am adicted to OTR and XM. I too am a big fan of Gunsmoke, and William Conrad. I first became aware of him on "Cannon",then "Nero Wolf" and "Jake and the Fat Man". Now I discover him as Matt Dillon, and like him even better than James Arness in the role. He was great in any part he played.

Matt Pelc,

I did a search to determine why Chester Wesley Proudfoot was not an "official" deputy to Marshall Dillon. The best I came up with was that he spent too much time being Ozzie Nelson's next door neighbor.

It is important that you be extremely cautious when browsing the internet. Avoid settling for just any “buy Viagra cheap deal”. Instead, emphasis should be paid on the caliber and credibility of the online pharmacy. With the success of Viagra tablets many fraudsters have attempted to duplicate false equivalents.

Definitely agree with what you stated. Your explanation was certainly the easiest to understand. I tell you, I usually get irked when folks discuss issues that they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail right on the head and explained out everything without complication. Maybe, people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
