I have a collection of Detective Book Club books from the 40's. Each book has 3 short stories. I was reading one called Payoff for the Banker. Imagine my surprise when they introduced the amateur detectives as Pam and Jerry North! Great book. I look forward to listening to this week's Mr. & Mrs. North episode.

Greg,
Awesome block of 4 of my favorites - Gildersleeve, Fibber, Whistler and Riley. I'll forgive the blasphemous lack of Jack Benny this week. Ever consider a block of Philip Marlowe?

Greg.....I very much enjoy Radio Classics on my 1.5 hour drive to work each day, especially the old westerns like Gunsmoke and The Six Shooter. I also catch Boston Blackie sometimes. I can't wait to leave the office today for my commute home, so that I can listen to some more great radio classics. Keep up the good work!

Hi, Greg,

Another great schdule this week! I'm grateful for all the information about the shows, and I've noticed in recent weeks the online interactive schedule no longer has story descriptions. I'm sure you've got your hands full! But any chance we'll get to have them back sometime? It was really great to get the descriptions and lists of some of the actors for each show. Thanks again for all of your wonderful work!

We really, really, need writers for todays television shows like the folks that wrote the shows on radio classics. This weeks Johhny Dollar marathon really had me. I thought I had it figured out several times but the "real" killer took me by surprise.

Does anyone else find it odd that many of the vintage PSAs are for things that are still as big a problem now as they were 50, 60 or 70 years ago? The more things change... well, ya'll know the rest.

Great job, Greg. Keep it up.

Hi, Gang! I hope you all have enjoyed "The Moon is Green" (an X Minus One episode) as well as this weeks' episodes of "The Whistler" with Joseph Kern plus "Gunsmoke" and "Suspense" with Joseph Cotten. Keep up the good work, Greg. Even though I've heard some of these before, they still sound wonderful.
I've had trouble sleeping for the last week --- I wake up at 2 or 3 AM and I can't get back to sleep; sadly, this is nothing new. But (and those who have read my past missives know this) I leave my radio on at night and it's "stuck" on Ch. 164. It may not be a good idea to listen to scary stuff in the wee small hours of the morning but I don't mind it! In fact, I LOVE it. Sometimes I drift back to sleep because that's what I SHOULD be doing but sometimes I don't --- it's usually because I get mesmerized by what I'm hearing. I used to have my radio "stuck" on all-news all the time (this was before we got XM) but today, the news is SO depressing and upsetting --- maybe THIS is why I'm having trouble sleeping! So keep up the good work, Greg. I love the stuff you're airing now and I also look forward to new stuff and your plans for the station. And keep writing, you radio bloggers out there! Your missives are a lot of fun to read even if I don't always agree.

Jim S,

I couldn't post your comment as you promoted a product that has a firm legal rights holder and therefore the site you recommended is likely providing them without legal rights secured. Even if that is not the case, it is not something I can risk on my blog site considering my job and relationship with Radio Classics' content provider.

Sorry, it was very kind of you though.

Great shows this week. A minor photo correction - that's Jack Haley Sr. Junior was Liza Minnelli's husband and produced THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT. That's a great shot of Robinson, Trevor and Bogie. It's from THE AMAZING DR. CLITTERHOUSE, made 10 years before KEY LARGO. By 1948, Bogie had aged the most due to his excessive cigarette smoking.

Thanks Ray,

Actually oddly they both were "Juniors" The Jack Haley in the photo (Wonder Show, Tin Man, etc) was born John Joseph Haley Jr. He later named his son, Jack Haley Jr. So I guess to be accurate in the photo caption, it should say John Joseph not Jack.

Hi, Greg! Have you considered becoming a Twitter? Check out www.twitter.com and you'll get an idea of how it works. I'M a twitterer - I'm only now adding people I'd like to follow. Telling you this should not interfere with your employers - I checked Old Time Radio and didn't find a spot, though there are lots of radio twitterers out there but with far different formats. Just a thought, dear Greg! I want the whole wide world to know about you and Radio Classics. Does any blogger twitter? If you do, I'm Navy Moo.

Hi, Gang! Did y'all hear "Sherlock Holmes and The Adventure of The Creeping Man"? That had to be one of the scariest Sherlock Holmes episodes I'd ever seen or heard. It's also a darned good read. So thank you, Greg, for playing it once again.

I agree -- more "Shadow" and "Lone Ranger." I believe we went a week or even two without the LR and I felt like something had been missing from my life. Hey, Gang - if you haven't done so yet, I STRONGLY suggest you read "Raised on Radio" by Gerald Nachman. It's terrific - the chapter I'm on now is about Jack Benny. Wait till you read it - he truly was a remarkable man. The paperback is out but the hardback may be hard to get - it was published in 1998. I also just found another titled "I Hit It Under the Sheets: Growing Up With Radio" by Gerald Eskenazi, published in October 2005. My birthday is in 6 months (Sept. 11 - can you believe that?) so if the Birthday Fairy donates to my enRICHment, I may buy it then. Finally, make sure to read Joan Benny's "Sunday Nights at 7," a combination of her father's unpublished autobiography and her own memories of her father and her mother, too. I love reading about the history of old-time radio! I grew up with television but I discovered Old Time Radio when I found "CBS Radio Mystery Theater" 30 years ago and I became HOOKED! Now I couldn't do without it and, now, thanks to XM Radio/Sirius, I don't have to.

"Shadow" and "Lone Ranger are good as well as "Six Shooter" being a Jimmy Stewart fan. The show I've really have come to enjoy is "The Whistler". Good endings! With all these shows it just proves that "Crime does NOT pay. BWA AH AH AH AH!"

Hi everyone!

As always, great schedule this week Greg! I could just listen to the voice of Jimmy Stewart ppppuuuurrrr all day...he is such a mesmerizing story teller with that voice! I remember one episode where he was creeping from large rock to large rock and then he crept behind a large log and he was whispering the whole time. I felt like I was right beside him trying to be as stealthy as he was. Wow, what an actor! What a voice!

Kudos to Agatha Christie again for "Where There's A Will". That's what great about all these shows...the twist at the end. I must admit, The Shady Lane Matter had me going through the whole thing...everyone was just so darn nice! Who could possibly be a killer?!

And I agree with you Rosemary; Sherlock was too, too creepy this time around. Whoo Hoo! was I ever hooked on that one! Who wants to listen to the depressing old new when we can listen to The Shadow get the bad guy every time! The weed of crime bears bitter fruit,...just ask Margo!...the Shadow knows................

Ciao!

Margolane,
You should be able to tell your printer to print in black & white. Click on File>Print and when the printer dialog box pops up, click on Properties or Preferences. You should be able to change the print job to B&W somewhere in there. The highlighted boxes will still have a background, only now it'll be grey. Hope this helps...

I am not much of a guy who thinks in so deeply about web design but I think your post had some valid points in it. Like designers are forced to design stuff within the limited code available and not go beyond it, their innovation is somewhat limited but still I think Web Design won't die! I agree that Amazon and other some big sites won't have a blog but now a days it's very important to have some sort of option available so people can quickly communicate their thoughts. I think Amazon if wants to shift it to that, they can get a customized CMS for themselves.
