That must be a weave on Phil Harris's head. When he shows up in the first Lum and Abner film, Dreamin Out Loud, as I recall, he's bald. (As well as playing, against type, as a big-city huckster.) And I hope Alice Faye was dressing up as Heidi for some film!

The highlight of any Alice Fay/Phil Harris show is when Alice Fay sings her song. Every word in the lyric is understandable, and she defines the phrase, "Honey in her Voice". She was one of Hollywood's best stars of the era, and easily the best singer among A-film actresses. Oh Philsy, you lucky dog you!

Greg, Thanks for another Johnny $ Marathon.. Love those.. As to Lance's comment re Alice Faye and "Heidi": I sadly remember my mother dressing me in one of those outfits.. and even as a pre-schooler I thought it was pretty darn embarrassing.. Any other Baby Boomer girls remember those outfits??

Ol' Curley, otherwise know as Phil Harris, was renown for his curly locks. Every photo I've seen of Phil, even late in his life, he seems to have hair. Since the first Lum and Abnder movie was released in 1940 I suspect he was in makeup for a baldy role.

Greg, I love Phil Harris and Alice Faye shows. They are some of the best written and executed comedy's on the channel. The Johnny Dollar shows are the best crime drama's in my opinion, looking forward to hearing the marathon. I am a new poster to the blog, but have enjoyed the channel for the past 4 years. I listen at least eight hours every night while on the road. Thanks for the Company!
Troy In Kentucky

Hi, Gang! Welcome aboard, Troy in Kentucky! I leave my radio on all night and listen as I drift off into sleep. I usually wake up one or two times in the night and it's a comfort to have that radio going. By the way, Troy, I once had relatives in Kentucky though I've never been there. "Nets" and Legatha lived in Campbellsville. As for Phil Harris - yes, he is funny but I don't go out of my way to listen. The only show I turn OFF absolutely is "Baby Snooks." I just find that totally stupid. I also turn off Abbott and Costello ONLY because they're too NOISY. Actually,I prefer the dramas, the detective shows, the literary shows and the science fiction. And I LOVE "Gunsmoke," "Have Gun Will Travel" and "Frontier Gentleman." As for comedies, I do like "Our Miss Brooks" (really appreciated that marathon last week), "Burns & Allen," "The Jack Benny Show" and Bob Hope's shows. My favorite "voices" are Orson Welles, John Dehner and William Conrad. I also love "X-Minus One," "The Whistler," "Suspense," "The Shadow," "Our Miss Brooks," "Inner Sanctum," "Gunsmoke," "Frontier Gentleman," and "Dimension X."

Thank you, Greg, for airing a Joseph Cotten "Suspense." Like "King" Orson, I think Joseph Cotten has a terrific voice. As for Katharine Hepburn --- I'm about to commit sacriledge (I can't spell that) but I can't stand her voice! It reminds me of nails on a chalk-board. And when she kept saying "Christopher Columbus" in 1933's "Little Women," I practically ran out of the room. Not that it matters a rat's nose but my favorite rendition of "Little Women" was the one with Winona Rider, Susan Sarandon, Claire Danes and Gabriel Byrne. That was made in 1994, I believe. All the other Jo's in the other LW movies seemed too masculine, too tom-boyish. Jo wasn't so much a tom-boy as she was an independent thinker and doer. Winona Rider seemed to capture the character best (again, in my humble opinion). Believe it or not, the only movie in which I really liked Miss Hepburn was her last role ... that was in 1994's "Love Affair" with Warren Beatty and Annette Benning.

The Orson Wells commercial outtakes were wonderful.... I wish there was more of that across the board... Keep finding those gems Greg and I will keep listening... Anyone else up for a Johhny Dollar weekend?

Hi, Gang! Besides babbling to my heart's content, the computer allows me to do research. Greg mentionend and remembered Edith Meiser (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EDITH --- born 5 months before and in the same year as my beloved maternal grandmother), with whom I was not familiar. IMDB didn't have much on her, although she was fairly prolific in her acting career. So I "did a google" and found her obituary in the NY Times. I copied/pasted it and now I'm sharing it with you. ENJJOY! And thank you, Greg, for the Sherlock Holmes double-decker and for "introducing" me to Miss Meiser. OK, gang, here is the question of the day: Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett as the definitive Sherlock Holmes? (This is no reflection upon Sir John Gielgud,Tom Conway or the countless other Sherlock Holmes portrayers; it's only that Basil Rathbone and Jeremby Brett are considered the PREMIERE portrayers of the great detective). Edith Meiser, 95, Dies; Actress and a Writer Published: Monday, September 27, 1993 Edith Meiser, a stage actress, writer and radio producer, died yesterday (9/26/93) at Roosevelt Hospital. She was 95 and lived in Manhattan. The cause was a heart attack, said William Herz Jr., a friend. In a career that spanned half a century, Miss Meiser, a versatile performer with a satiric wit, appeared in more than 20 Broadway shows, including "Garrick Gaieties," "Sabrina Fair" and the 1960 production of "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." She was born in Detroit and graduated from Vassar College. She made her Broadway debut in "The New Way" in 1923 and went on to appear in "Fata Morgana" and "The Guardsman." Beginning in 1925, she appeared in three editions of the Theater Guild's "Garrick Gaieties," a hit musical revue that spoofed Broadway. Film audiences saw her in "The Middle of the Night," "It Grows on Trees" and "Queen For A Day," a trilogy based on stories by Dorothy Parker, Faith Baldwin and John Ashworth. She performed with the Marx Brothers on radio and wrote scripts for Helen Hayes's first radio serial, "The New Penny," and for the "Sherlock Holmes" series beginning in the 1930's. Miss Meiser also wrote mystery novels and a play, "The Wooden O." She was a member of the Actors Equity board of governors and the chairwoman of the Equity Library Theater.

No contest Rosemary...it's Jeremy Brett all the way! And thanks for all the research! margo

Fabulous schedule again! You know how I love the Johnny Dollars and Alice Faye/Phil Harris. Rosemary, I do the same thing as I go to sleep. Being in a noisy city, it is very comfortable as I drift in and out of sleep to hear those wonderful voices and stories. As to the question of Jeremy Brett vs Basil Rathbone...too difficult. They both bring different qualities to the character. Jeremy Brett brought seriousness and authenticity to the role but I can't help but love the interplay between Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Hi, Gang and (tonight) especially "the lovely" margolane: Actually, the research on Edith Meiser was easy because the subject was so interesting (and my father finally fixed the computer. He's a technical genius but I'm a total featherhead when it comes to things mechanical). As for Jeremy Brett --- well, I have to agree but I do so reluctantly because I was so loyal to Basil for so long. But 2 things enable me to agree in good conscience: 1.) Nigel Bruce as Basil's Holmes was little more than a buffoon. In the book and in the JB (Jeremy Brett) series, his Watsons - first David Burke and then Edward Hardwicke (son of Sir Cedric Hardwicke) were perfect counterparts. They were laid back and intelligent without being buffoons. 2.) The JB series was closer to the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle books and stories. When Holmes and Watson ended up fighting the Nazis in the BR series of movies, it went from the sublime (despite Watson) to the ridiculous. I realize there was a war on and this was a way to boost morale but it looked ridiculous! By the way, Margolane, do a google on Jeremy Brett or go to www.imdb.com and you'll learn about him. His was a sad story; he died in 1995 and he was only 59. His wife, Joan Wilson, who had been executive producer of PBS' "Mystery!" had died a few years earlier of cancer and I think he lived in slo-mo/automoatic pilot until he just plain died...probably of a broken heart! Thanks, Greg, for the Bing Crosby tribute, especially the "Bells of Saint Mary." I had my own version of Sister Benedict in 5th and 6th grades and we're still in touch although it was (now) 44 years ago when I first had her. I'm sure when she got my first letter in 2001, after not hearing from or seeing me in more than 35 years, she was shocked and then she probably said, "Oh, s--t!" As a student, I think she hated me but we've become really close friends and I still love her - now as a friend as well as a teacher. So, in honor of my Sr. Benedict (who's name actually was Sr. Rose de Lima) I thank you. Finally, (as usual, I'm very loquatious)... 12/7/09 will be Arch Oboler's 100th birthday. I think that demands a 2 2-hour marathon -- there's enough material for it, that's for sure! Do you know he was only 5'1-1/2" tall? Of course, me being less than 5' tall, that's still a giant!
5/21/2009 12:27:43 AM
Rosemary, We have some time, but what Arch Oboler would you like to hear for his 100th? Greg

Is there any word yet as to when "The Long Ranger" will return to XM 164?
Jeremiah
5/21/2009 3:05:49 AM
Hi, Gang! Greg - my 2 favorite (and scariest) Arch Obolers are "Revolt of the Worms" and "Scoop." (By the way, my mother used to call me "Previous" because, in many cases, I'd do things way, way in advance!). Thank you, by the way, for asking. Thanks also for checking on the status of "The Lone Ranger" and "Sgt. Preston of the Yukon." Finally, thanks for "Don Winslow of the Navy." Any time you have a Navy-oriented show, you sure may play it --- having served (as a Reservist) for 10 years, I think I have salt-water in my veins. (I never served on board ship though --- I'd be too much woman for all those beautiful young men but more accurately, I get terribly seasick). So you may play Don Winslow any time. More later, Gang ! Enjoy this beautiful day wherever you are. God bless and Good Night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!
5/21/2009 3:25:29 AM
Jeremiah, Unfortunately, No. Still caught up in discussions between our content provider and the owners of the series (the also own Sgt. Preston of the Yukon). Sorry. Greg.
5/21/2009 3:07:42 PM
Hey Rosemary, Didn't you love Nigel Bruce in Suspicion, old bean?! Greg, is there a version of Suspicion you could play one day? Did Nigel Bruce do anything else on the radio? Seems his name is synonymous with Sherlock Holmes, but little else. I have a suggestion for Arch's birthday marathon -- In the spring of 1938, Lights Out earned a good deal of publicity for its fourth anniversary as a half-hour show when actor Boris Karloff travelled to Chicago to appear in five consecutive episodes. Among his roles: an accused murderer haunted by an unearthly creature in "The Dream"; the desperate husband in "Catwife"; a mad, violin-playing hermit in "Valse Trieste", plus two others. Greg, if you could play all five of these with Karloff (if you have them), that would make quite a marathon! Lights Out, Everybody! margo
5/22/2009 10:40:41 AM
Greg, Thanks for the update on the Lone Ranger. Even though there is no update it's still an update. Is there a chance that Sirius XM might not be able to play those shows again?

Hi, Gang - this time specifically to "the lovely margolane": Apparently, Nigel Bruce had a lengthy movie career (I checked with IMDB). I remember him in "Rebecca" - he played Giles Lacey, the husband of Gladys Cooper's character. He also had roles in "Lassie Come Home," "Suspicion" and "The Corn is Green" (alongside Bette Davis). He also was only 53 when he died; I always thought he was in his 70s. And IMDB said he specialized in playing upperclass English buffoons! He and his wife were married for 32 years until he died and they had 2 daughters, Jennifer and Pauline. He was born in 1895 and died in 1953 (the year I was born!). He's also a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce! IMDB did not say anything about his radio work so there may not have been much of it OR his work may have been done more in England than in the USA. Hey, Greg: Great pic of Joseph Cotten, another of my favorites. Also, is it possible to get Australian, British, Canadian or Scottish classic radio shows? I think that would be fascinating. Thank you SO much for the Fort Laramie airings -- May 21st is Raymond Burr's birthday (he was born in 1917 and died of kidney/liver cancer 9/12/1993 ... the day after my 40th birthday). More later, Gang! Happy Listening, Happy Trails, God Bless and Good Night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!
5/24/2009 3:08:11 AM
I knew I liked Nigel Bruce for a reason! My family line runs directly from Robert the Bruce as well. I heard all the stories and lineage at my grandmother's knee. Hhhmm! The things you learn on this blog!! ;o)
5/26/2009 9:39:07 PM
I never was good at math, Margolane; Nigel Bruce was 58 when he died, not 53! But he still looked like he was in his 70s and I don't think it wa smake-up! I'm also 1/4 Scottish (the other 3/4s is English, Irish and Welsh, with a smattering of German and Dutch for "continental flair" so people will think of me as being somewhat civilized!) I first began to appreciate my Scottish heritage when I saw "Braveheart" (with Mel HEART HEART Gibson) and then went to Scotland, where I had SO MUCH FUN. I LOVE that country. I also loved Iceland but that's because it was and remains a lovely country, not because I have any Icelandic in me (though, being rather round, people might mistaken me for a puffin). I went there mainly to honor my maternal grandfather who was stationed there in the Navy during WWII...after having spent 2 years at Pearl Harbor (and got out 6 months before Pearl Harbor). I wonder who he pissed off to go from paradise of Hawaii to the chill of Iceland!

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.
