Convention Talk!

by gregbell 6/18/2009 7:18:00 PM

While the October Friends of Old Time Radio http://www.lofcom.com/nostalgia/fotr held in Newark, NJ is still tentative as far as my possible attendance, I will be attending the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention being held August 27th - 29th in Aberdeen, Maryland (about 30 miles north of Balitimore). You can learn more about it at this website http://www.midatlanticnostalgiaconvention.com/

I plan on being there Friday afternoon to watch the Old Time Radio show re-creation and then will be meeting folks and conducting interviews on that Saturday (8/29) morning into the afternoon.

There are some fun folks there as it also celebrates television and films in addition to radio. Among the confirmed guests are James Best (Dukes of Hazzard), Lee Meriwether (Catwoman on Batman) Oscar winner Celeste Holm and radio and TV actor Bob Hastings (McHales Navy, All In The Family, Archie Andrews, X Minus One)

This is when we need transporters, as seen in "Star Trek." So, Greg, make sure to take LOTS of pix and tell us absolutely EVERYTHING! I'm glad you're going. Wish I could go, too; I'm still waiting to hear if I'll get the job at Barnes & NOble and IF I do, I MAY be working so I don't want to book myself for anything and then have to back out!

Lee Meriwether was also on Tv's "Barneby Jones" and a former Miss America. Have a good time Greg.

Greg,

I agree. It sounds like it's going to be fun. I wish I could be there as well. Are you going to record some of the interviews and play them?

Thanks guys,

It is fairly open-ended but we hope to record interviews for replay as well as record panel discussions and maybe even the radio play re-creation. Then I can play it all later on the channel.

I hope this is the beginning of attending more events around the country so I can meet up with all of you. (As I one person channel during the XM only days, I just didn't have time) In addition to Maryland and New Jersey, there are also Old Time Radio events in Cincinnati and Los Angeles, and I would like to set something up someday at the Chicago based Radio Hall of Fame.

Greg.

Greg,
Boy I really hope you can get to the FOTR con in NJ. The surroundings are hardly beautiful but in the convention it is really great. I have only been to the one last year but I am heartily looking forward to this years convention. The line up of guests is looking great!!
I enjoyed the Superman block this week and the new shows a lot...

Greg,

How about as many pictures of good stuff or old radio stars as you can?!?!?!?

Can you bring us all a t-shirt or hat too? ;)

I enjoyed Abbott & Costello this week. I love how Lou recovers from a mistake or mis-timed punch line. Bud also worked hard not to laugh a few times too.

Have fun....

Hi, Gang! Hey, Greg - really enjy the "new" stuff, especially "The Fat Man." I learned Mr. Smart died relatively young and not from a heart attack due to obesity. He was in his 50s and he got pancreatic cancer. Need I say more?
Anyway, next week looks (sounds?) really good. Please wish your Dad a nice father's day and let me wish YOU a Happy Father's Day!
Other writers have said Newark isn't much and they're right - in part. But Mayor Cory Booker, who is the cousin of an acquaintence of mine, is really trying to clean it up. Long before he came into power, there was (and I assume remains) a section called the Ironbound section. Great Portuguese restaurants such as Tony De Canaca's (if it's still there). Also, there's the Performing Arts Center and the Newark Museum which has some terrific stuff. I went there a few years ago to see some Russian icons from Alaska (That's not too esoteric, is it?). So don't let anyone disuade you from going to Newark because of its reputation. Oh, by the way, the Holiday Inn North (isn't that the place for the October convention) is very nice. We Naval Reserve sailors used to stay there --- we didn't have contract berthing so we had to stay at the area hotels. Such a hardship! The Airport Marriott was the best place by far - complete with swimming pool and a piano bar!
Small grammatical correction if you don't mind, Greg: When something is being done again, it's spelled "re-create" or "re-created" (with hyphen). If you're having fun, it's recreate (no hyphen). I worked at a newspaper for 30 years; hopefully, I know something about grammar.
More later - tomorrow I have a double graduation party to attend --- the older daughter is graduating from college and the younger is graduating from high school. And we had an early Father's Day celebration. My sister and I took Dad to Mr. C's Beachfront Bistro and the food was very good but very rich so I was ill later but I'm fine now. I know TMI -- Too Much Information -- but I like to share. Again, to Greg and Dan Bell and to all the fathers out there - I wish you a very happy Father's Day!

Capt Blythe

Hi Greg: I love RadioClassics. I've been listening to it with a local radio show in Seattle for almost 30 years now. Prefer it to tv. I finally got Sirius set up in the home so I can listen to it all of the time now.

Any chance you'll put your station on the up channels of Comcast cable tv (the 900 range) where we can get it through the cable like some FM channels instead of a satellite scanner on my window sill?

Finally, you look a lot like a younger version of a Greg Bell I was stationed with in the Navy over 30 years ago. Any relations with the same name that fit?

Hi, Capt. Blythe - I think you and I are or were ahead of our time --- I think we were looking for cable radio only on TV. Anyway, because XM and Sirius, are satellite, I'm not sure it could be 'strung up' on cable. Too bad - your idea is a good one. I have digital music from Comcast and I love it!
I was in the Navy as an SK2, so, technically, I should call you "Sir" and salute you. However, I'm a civilian now and besides, I'm indoors and uncovered! I went to "boot camp" 9/12/84 (the day after my 31st birthday) and was graduated Nov. 15, 1984, then I went to Apprenticeship Training for 4 weeks. I got home in December 1984 and reporterd to my first reserve station in January 1985. I was in the SAM program - a program that let me go from recruit training to apprenticship training and directly to a reserve center -- no active duty time except for my annual 2 weeks and my 1 weekend a month. That was perfect for me --my mother was sick and, had I gone directly to active duty, I might have been transferred to Diego Garcia...! I got out in 1994; now I wish I had stayed but personal and health issues prompted me to seek, receive and get an honorable discharge. I was PROUD of being in the Navy! If I had it to do over again, I'd go in right after high school graduation and work my way up so I could become a company commander. But c'est la vie, c'est le guerre!
I'm so glad you listen to this station! Does your wife like it, too? What shows do you like? I like Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, Frontier Gentleman, Dragnet, The Whistler, Suspense, Lights Out, Lux Radio Theater and other adio anthology shows, and Inner Sanctum. I also love Jack Benny, Burns & Allen, Bob Hope and Our Miss Brooks. I'm finally beginning to appreciate Phil Harris and Alice Faye and Fibber McGeen & Molly. I do NOT like Baby Snooks, The Bickersons "Vic & Sade." I can tolerate but ouldn't buy My Favorite Husband and Father Knows Best.
Have you ordered CDs, tapes or the new-fangled IPod or MP3 or downloads of shows from Radio Spirits? It's the best of all the companies and, trust me, I have a bunch of tapes and CDs; Ipod, MP3 and dowloading is absolutely beyond my paygrade...!
Anyway, take care, Capt. Blythe. Anchors Aweigh and GO, NAVY!!!

Another place to have the Old Time Radio Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention is at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. It's a suburb of Detroit. Greenfield Village is very Nostalgic. A lot of historic items there. Take a look at http://www.thehenryford.org/village/index.aspx.

Was disappointed to see Radio Classics is not an option on the new i-Pod/i-Phone app. Any plans to add it?

Am loving the guest host. Quite an improvement on the usual bland commentary. Thank you for your funny acknowledgement of how grossly PC-deficient Bob Hope is.

I wonder if you'd inflict the vapid and incredibly white bread "Xmas in July" on us too!

Don't go!

Nice information, many thanks to the author. It is incomprehensible to me now, but in general, the usefulness and significance is overwhelming. Thanks again and good luck!
