Sirius 118 XM 164 PDF Version and the Excel Version
Above are the schedule links to the week or June 7th to the 13th, 2009 on Radio Classics.
I am still gathering folks for the Schedule By Mail and hope to have it up and running soon.
Highlights for the upcoming week included celebrating Garland on the 87th anniversary of her birth with an hour long Lux Radio Theatre version of "Morning Glory". I had planned to use The Wizard Of Oz but the 70th anniverary of the classic film's release is coming up later this summer, so I want to save it for that.
Also I am bringing back a two hour special honoring one of the best voices on the channel, Gerald Mohr with episodes of Suspense, Philip Marlowe, and the Screen Director's Playhouse.
And yes, another Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar marathon and this one is new to the channel (The Alder Matter from August 1956).
Photos Below: Judy Garland, Gerald Mohr
Promised Photos Below: Peggy Webber (in the 1958 film "The Screaming Skull") directing her group C.A.R.T Acting Group; Dragnet Photos Below: Barton Yarborough (Ben Romero) & Jack Webb (Joe Friday); Ben Alexander (Frank Smith) Alexander as a silent film child star. Photos Below: Vic & Sade Cast; Lum & Abner (Chester Lauck & Norris Goff)

great pic's specially love J. Carroll's pic. classic...I was just listening to the The Green Hornet (with the scientist and the dead assistant). I think I heard Brace Beemer in there - think it was a police chief Smile I know they all worked at the same station...but it was nice to hear his voice... I miss it!!

Being a fan of Dragnet for such a long time I've gotten to know the voices. I remember watching old reruns for so long. Now when I listen to the show on XM radio I recognize the voices on the radio show. Especially Peggy Webber. I'm also really beginning to like Richard Diamond and his sarcastic method of solving crimes. I like the detective shows. Greg, bring back some Blondie episodes if you can please. Also I see that Archie Andrews is going to be on next week. I didn't realize that it was Archie and Jughead and the gang. Looking forward to hearing it. Greg, will we be hearing The Lone Ranger soon? Tell the owners of the radio show we miss it and would love to hear it again. Also, I see where Sunday, June 7th marks the 54th anniversary of the last broadcast of Lux Radio Theater. Thank goodness all those shows live on at XM.

Hi, Gang! GREAT pix, Greg. Where do you find them (don't worry - that's just a theoretical question --- it's like asking a magician how he does his tricks). Really looking forward to next week. And, as you pointed out, Greg --- 1939 is a GOLDEN year! In addition to being the 70th birthday of 2 special priests and a former editor I know, it's also the 70th anniversary of some of the greatest movies ever made. I know you played "Wuthering Heights" recently but it is a 1939 "screen gem" so can you play it again? And I'm looking forward to "TWOO" (The Wizard of Oz) - still one of my all-time favorite movies. I assume GWTW (Gone With The Wind) never made it to radio -- too LONG, right? England had a version of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" - I know because I bought the tape (the other side has my favorite movie of all time --- "Brief Encounter" with Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson -- on it). Do you have "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" on American radio classics? What other 1939 films do you have for radio broadcast? That should be a wonderful series and I'm really looking forward to it! (I know Lux Radio Theater has "Dark Victory," another 1939 classic, in its roster. Can you play that, too?). Mentioning "Dark Victory" reminds me of the late, GREAT Bette Davis -- I really appreciated you playing an hour or so of her work on her birthday or during that week. My all-time FAVORITE Bette Davis line comes from "The Letter": "With all my heart, I still love the man I killed." It's a scream, I swear. You're right, Bob Irish, I'm beginning to recognize "Dragnet" voices too --- especially Peggy Webber. She's terrific! Do you know that for the TV show, Jack Webb had something like 2 or 4 suits and he'd alternate wearing them? Saved on costume changes! More later, Gang! Take care and HAPPY TRAILS! PS: You still can have "Vic & Sade" but I really do like "Lum and Abner." They're BEYOND corn pone but I enjoy them tremendously. I also enjoy Judy Canova. Finally, thanks for playing "Have Gun Will Travel, "Gunsmoke" and "Frontier Gentleman" (I'm surprised that show lasted less than a year. As you said, Greg, it really is very well done). I know lots of folks are clamoring for "The Lone Ranger" as am I but my FAVORITE westerns are the aforementioned "HGWT," "Frontier Gentleman" and, of course, GUNSMOKE!

I like the Dragnet block this week. They are always fascinating. One question: why the edits to the season ending episode of Jack Benny from 1948? Both Mary Livingston's and Dennis Day's arrivals seem to have been cut short (there is a later reference in the episode to Mary being hungry, which is not in the version playing on the channel). Was this deliberately done for the channel, or were the edits in the episode when it came into your possession?

Keith, I sometimes get shows that for some reason were previously edited before the came to us, that apparently was one of them. Sorry. Greg

Hi, Gang! If anyone could help me with this, I'd be VERY grateful. (I'd offer $$$ but I don't have a job ... yet. I went to my interview for Barnes & Noble but I'll have to wait a wee bit longer). Anyway... my dad bought XM and most of the time, it works fine but sometimes, such as today, it goes "in and out" - there are "blips" in the sound so there's no sound at all. It can last for a few seconds to a whole minute and it DRIVES ME CRAZY. I move the little "antenna" gizmo that sits on the window of my father's office so the sound comes back but that seems too ridiculous and if it happens at 2 AM, I'm not about to get up out of my nice warm bed and move it. Do I need a more sophisticated antenna or is it something to do with the satellite and maybe the weather or the time of day? I'm "technically challenged" so if you have an explanation, please make it something a baby could understand!
6/6/2009 6:45:04 PM
Great pictures. I'm making your blog regular reading although I don't post very often. I listen to your channel almost exclusively except for brief trips to Fox news just to keep caught up. I'm not enough of a buff to name all the actors but I do enjoy listening to them very much. I don't think there is a show I hate, just some I like better. I have my home XM radio feeding into a replica old fashioned radio so it seems like I'm listening to them back in time.Probably not an original idea with me but I think it's cool.

Rosemary: The two XM satellites are "geo-synchronous", meaning they stay at the same spots in the sky all the time. They are a little south of the equator, one near Venezuela, so as much as possible have your antenna pointing toward the SOUTHERN SKY to get the best signal from them. When I travel on business, I always do this and it works well. I hope this will help you. GERALD MOHR This is the best photo I've seen of him... looks like he is cracking wise in the "Adventures of Philip Marlowe". Mohr was a big favorite of author Raymond Chandler, who created Phil Marlowe and wrote 7 novels about him. Mr. Chandler regularly listened to the show from his home... located right here in San Diego! Gerald Mohr captures the combination of humor and intro- spection which makes Philip Marlowe so memorable.

Rosemary, I've had this problem occasionally. Sometimes it's as simple as I closed the blinds and the signal can't get thru. Sometimes, if the unit has been on for a long time, it needs to be turned off, be off for a moment, and then on again. Bad weather can muck up satellite as well, but not often. Hope this helps! I can't imagine what I'd do if anything messed up my OTR on my XM.

Hi, Gang! Thanks for the tips on my problem of silence (actually, my radio's problem. I personally don't have the problem, though many folks probably wish I did!). Right now, I'm listening to the "western block" and it's GREAT! I enjoyed the Hopalong Cassidy Hour but I'm really a die-hard "Gunsmoke" and "Frontier Gentleman" fan so I'm staying awake to hear those 2 fine shows. What would you do if your XM went out, Margolane? Probably what I do (but can't print). I learned the other day a friend of mine also has XM but he didn't say what he enjoys. I told him about my hobby (amounting to almost a passion) of Classic Radio but I think that went over his head. He's very bright, don't get me wrong; he's just not into OTR. He just may have never had experience with it as I've had. I've listened on and off since the 1970s. One thing I really enjoy is Greg's seemingly endless font of information about the actors, directors, shows, writers, etc. It feeds my love of trivia and it also humanizes the shows and stars. I still think it's sad and it makes me very angry that the folks who gave us TV's "Gunsmok" wouldn't use William Conrad because he didn't "look" the part. It's nothing against James Arness - he's a fine man and person. But to me, William Conrad of the WONDERFUL VOICE will always be Matt Dillon. More tomorrow or, more likely, Sunday. I have a wedding to attend (sadly, NOT mine) and I will get home late so I'll be tired and irritable. The wedding will be fine; I don't have XM Radio in my car, however, so I'll resort to cassettes. Once youget out of Monmouth County, the radio is absolutely primitive! With that, I shall close. Happy Listening, Everybody, and Happy Trails. God Bless!

XM Radio classics is the absolute best. Prior to purchasing my first XM radio 5 years ago (I now own 4 of them) I used to listen to old time radio programs on CD's & cassettes. I live in Southern California but spend a lot of time on the road an XM radio just makes the trip easier. I couldn't even tell you what the SoCal radio stations are playing anymore as I quit listening years ago and switched to XM so I could find something I liked. I know it's somewhat of a conundrum but the only XM stations I listen too religiously are Radio Classics and Boneyard & Hair Nation. Any, I actually do have a point to make so I guess I'd better get to it. I love the diversity of programs on Radio classics, but conspicuous by its absence is one of the most famous radio programs of all time..... Amos & Andy. Why is there no Amos and Andy on the schedule? The plots are pure escapism and would likely hold up well against the sitcoms of today. Please consider adding Amos, Andy, and the Kingfish to the lineup....

Hi, Gang - specifically this time to JR. Hi, JR! Welcome to "our" blog --- it's nice having a California boy. You'll love this blog and you'll get to know folks. I'm from New Jersey and I've had XM Radio for more than a year. I leave Ch. 164 on ALL DAY and Night (anyone who knows me knows I leave my radio on all night and if I wake up, I end up listening to it to lull me back to sleep. But NEVER listen to what Greg calls "the Scary stuff" at 2 o'clock in the morning! I did that a couple of times and my eyes were, to quote my mother, on stalks the rest of the night). I know the A&A question came up a while ago and Greg will have to provide the answer as to why Classic Radio doesn't air the show. I agree with you, however; it would be very funny. Hey, Greg --- would you ever consider airing "My Little Margie"? I always loved the TV show and I think the radio show would be great, too. Really good shows this week, Greg - especially "Rogue's Gallery (or was it Richard Diamond?) in Bolivia and Fort Laramie with one of my all-time favorites, Raymond Burr. And the YTJD marathon -- featuring one of my vocal heartthrobs, John Dehner, is wonderful. Even the comedies are good. So, AS USUAL thanks for the terrific work. Oh, and thank you for telling me about the Friends of Old Time Radio "convention" held each October in Newark, NJ (my state). I'll really try to make it if I KNOW you and your Mrs are coming. Newark itself doesn't have much but what it does have is great - the museum, and (if it's still there) Tony DeCanaca's Portuguese restaurant in the "Ironbound" district. Also, the PAC (Perfvorming Arts Center) and Sacred Heart Cathedral. So I look forward to seeing and meeting you. I feel like I know you already. I enjoyed the information you provided on a company - I heard it at 5:30 AM so I'm afraid I've forgotten the name of it but I'll hear it later. AND YOU MADE ME FAMOUS! I heard that --- my name as a listener to "Lights Out." Move over, Susan Boyle! More later and, again, welcome, JR. Nice to have you on board. Are you from SAN DIEGO, one of my favorite cities?
6/13/2009 4:59:16 PM
Hi Greg, remember me? I bugged you a few years ago about a broadcasting term known as "woof." I think I decided it meant mark, or was another term for that. Anyhow, glad to see you've got the blog up, and you've got some great fans here. My dad and I love this channel. Our favorite programs are, Jonny Dollar, Richard Diamond, Gun Smoke and drag Net, but I like the funny stuff more than he does, it'swhat I drifted off to while ncatching a nap after work today. My dad was about to unsubscribe from XM earlier this year, because we weren't sure we could still keep up with the fee, but they gave it to us at half-price so we'd stay, cool huh? I mostly hang out on 164, but I do love the Real Jazz channel, and Hi Standards of course and I like the classical music channels as well. Well, I've rambled on long enough but one more thing before I go, if you're doing the Christmas in July again, play that great Suspense episode, the one with the House-keeper taking care of the little girl, and they don't know where her parents are. That was the most tense episode I've ever listened to. I stayed up once just to hear it. Oh yeah, and the one with the ambulance driver with the angel, or maybe he was God or something, I don't remember, but that was a great Christmas episode as well. Oh yeah, andI loveFamily Theater... go Fr. Patrick, he rocked! Okay, now I'm getting odd from lack of sleep, night all.

Greg: Tonight (July 23) on the Judy Canova show I heard a voice of the actress who plays Aunt Aggie (Verna Felton) who has one of the most recognizable voices on both radio and TV. I do think she gave a stellar performance as Mrs. Potts in the remarkable film "Picnic." She did so many voices over the years on radio that is like a finger-print, no one else has that particular sound. You do great work. Enjoy all the episodes. Phil
