Shadow Announcer Ken Roberts R.I.P.

by gregbell 6/28/2009 12:31:00 PM

Interesting that the only obituary I have found so far, Washington Post Obit does not list his time as announcer on The Shadow, which is easily the show we hear him most often working on.

"Mr. Roberts who was born Saul Trochman on Feb. 22, 1910, in Manhattan died on June 19 at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He was 99. Ken Roberts was father of Broadway and film actor Tony Roberts."

Add to the roster of radio people who have gone to that great big Microphone in the Sky: Gale Storm, star of "My Little Margie" on radio and TV. Could you find an episode or two of MLM and play it to honor Miss Storm? Admittedly, I was and remain a great fan of MLM. She was 87 and, according to her son, she died in a nursing home of natural causes.

It is always sad when we see yet another from the golden age pass on. I do though want to say that he is one of the better announcers we hear on the channel. I just always loved the intro to the Shadow. Do I smell some shadow marathons coming upon us? That would be super.

Matt - I second the idea of a few Shadow marathons, come on Greg....what do you think?

Greg, Good to hear Vic and Sade, especially with Uncle Fletcher in the cast. Some people just don't get it, but for those of us who do V&S is the best there is.

Hmm, I have a rock in my shoe.

Don... I agree 100% on Vic and Sade. There is a gentleness about it coupled with humor and characters that are familiar and oddly comforting. I have a hankering for peanuts with a schmeer of chocolate on it. LOL

Just wanted to say XM Radio Classics is all I ever listen to, and I frequently mention it on my little trucking blog - amx1047.blogspot.com

I listen to the same stuff over and over while driving. Greg Bell and old time radio classics never fails to keep me in an upbeat and positive mood.

Thanks so much Greg Smile

P.S. I've been having Sgt Preston/King and Lone Ranger withdrawal pains lately. Hope to hear them again soon.

Greetings Everyone. This was sent to me in an e-mail and I thought I would share it with you all.

Happy 4th of July

RED SKELTON'S RECIPE
FOR THE PERFECT MARRIAGE

1. Two times a week we go to a nice restaurant, have a
Little beverage, good food and companionship
She goes on Tuesdays; I go on Fridays.

2. We also sleep in separate beds.
Hers is in California , and mine is in Texas .

3. I take my wife everywhere....
But she keeps finding her way back.

4. I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our anniversary.
"Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!" she said.
So I suggested the kitchen.

5. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.

6. She has an electric blender, electric
Toaster and electric bread maker.
She said "There are too many gadgets, and no place
To sit down!" So I bought her an electric chair.

7. My wife told me the car wasn't running well
Because there was water in the carburetor.
I asked where the car was. She told me, "In the lake."

8. She got a mud pack, and looked great for two days.
Then the mud fell off.

9. She ran after the garbage truck, yelling, "Am I too late
For the garbage?" The driver said, "No, jump in!"

10. Remember: Marriage is the number one cause of divorce.

11. I married Miss Right. I just didn't know her
First name was Always.

12. I haven't spoken to my wife in 18 months
I don't like to interrupt her.

13. The last fight was my fault though.
My wife asked, "What's on the TV?"
I said, "Dust!"

Don't take life too seriously, no one ever makes it out alive anyway....

I remember Ken Roberts unforgetable voice as the announcer on Search for Tomorrow until the early 80's.

His voice, just the first few words, have made it easy for me to know whats coming up next. He will be missed. Sad that most of current Hollywood wont acknowledge the ground work that was laid for them by this and other pioneers of radio and even the folks who made it to television in the early days. And without all the foul language..

Another AMAZING schedule this week. Thanks so much and keep up the great programming.

And Bill, thanks for printing out the Red Skelton bit. I've seen it before but it always makes me giggle!

I absolutely was thrilled when I discovered Radio Classics on the satellite radio that came with my car. Up until then I had been buying radio classic cds from eBay and getting audiobooks whereever I could. I am getting the iPhone soon & was so glad that Greg announced that we could get the satellite radio on it as well. I do a lot of driving as part of my work and have always loved being read to. I have been getting a new insight into the times when the radio plays were broadcast through the commercials and announcements. Great historical snapshots. Thank you Greg, for all of the great work & effort that you do on our behalf.

Ursula,

To clarify;

I did NOT say you could get Radio Classics on the iPhone! It is not available there nor online at this point in time. (Most other satellite channels are on it though).

There are promotional announcements running the channel about the iPhone but again Radio Classics is not there for now due to legal broadcasting and royalty rights issues.

We are working on that, but at this point you can't get it.

Greg.

The NY Times obit does in fact mention Ken Roberts' work on The Shadow as well as on other classic radio programs.

Also, I'm really not looking forward to a week of non-stop Xmas-themed programs but will have to grin and bear it. I think I wrote last year that a couple of hours per day would be more than sufficient.

Greg, I heard you mention today that you could no longer play The Lone Ranger or Sgt. Preston but could still play The Green Hornet. Maybe you already explained the reason but I missed it. Would you please explain it again.

My guess is that it involves money like everything else these days. I'm only guessing that the owner sold the rights to XM, then it became Sirius/XM and that means twice as many listeners so the owner wants more money. When the contract expired with XM they would no longer allow those two shows to air unless a new contract and more money where involved. As I say, this is only a guess on my part.

Losing someone as talented as Mr. Ken Roberts is definitely a big blow to the radiograph industry. He is such a great announcers who speak his mind. He says what he means and means what he says. He is such a big loss.

Actually, I didn't find exactly what I expected. But, I was impressed by your good looking site. So I wanted to leave you this little note.
