Hi, Greg! Sometimes it's a delight to be wrong about something - or in this case, to be ignorant and find out something you didn't know before. Specifically: I didn't know The GREAT Lena Horne had been in an episode of "Suspense." Hence, I look forward to hearing it. Thanks also for putting in a Bette Davis program - "An American is Born." And though I love James Caggney, I'm not a fan of "Yankee Doodle Dandy." But because you've put it on, I may just give it a listen.
Great pix, by the way, of both Miss Lena and Miss Olivia! In GWTW, I liked Olivia de Havilland's character (Melanie, of course) best, even though Scarlett called her mealy-mouthed. Melanie was always kind and that's the best way to be, in my opinion. I hope you had a great birthday, Greg! And I hope you and Daddy Dan had a great Father's Day, too! Thanks, Daddy Dan, for your annual Father's Day selections -- -they were terrific --- some of my favorite Classic Radio shows were represented! More later! Have a great day!

Shocked... I wonder if America was shocked when seeing those Actress's photos. Nowdays, we think nothing of it, and consider the dress elegant.

Hi, Gang! You're right, Lana, and good point! I think those dresses are beautiful. Today, even wedding dresses are down to "there" and the girls are falling out of the tops!
HEY, GANG - I'M SURE YOU'VE HEARD IT BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T, MICHAEL JACKSON AND FARRAH FAWCETT HAVE DIED. I know this blog deals with past things (and from what I've seen lately, it is so much better) but to lose 2 talents such as Farrah and Michael is sad.

ummm...wow...truly beautiful in any era.

Yes, it is also tragic for the people we lost this week.

Thanks Greg for the triple shot of X Minus One this past week....

I have always thought that Lena Horne was one of the most beautiful women in the world.

Many times on the radio programs, particularly the comedies and varieties, they make reference to Bill Paley the head of CBS. I have a Bill Paley anecdote I thought I would share for grins and giggles.... about 25 years ago, my inlaws met him at a social function. My MIL is from Sweden (I am Swedish too). Anyhow the conversation came around to Swedish meatballs and they ended up extending an invitation to him to come over to their home for a traditional Swedish meatball dinner. Well, he accepted and showed up at their small Manhattan apartment,( brought there in his limo LOL). They said he ate a robust meal and loved the Swedish limpa bread so much that he took a loaf home with him.

When I hear Jack Benny pretend to quake in his boots with anxiety over his boss Bill Paley my mind returns to that story. In reality, I think many people litereally quaked in their boots over that man. Of course when my inlaws extended the invitation they never in a million years dreamed he would accept and show up to boot.

Farrah was unfairly overshadowed by Micheal Jackson's death. That poor woman suffered for months and endured a great deal, but all I see is MJ everywhere, hearing his music all over the place. Give me a break. I used to think he was cool, but after the media exposed his grotesque strangeness, especially dangling his child over the railing, and his weird facial features, he does not need any fame.

Greg,

You may ahve covered this before, but I am curious as the date of the oldest recording you've played on Radio Classics, as well as the other end of the spectrum, the lastest recording you've played. I assume the earliest was probably from the very late '20's and the latest maybe around 1964?

Thanks!

Jeff,

Jack Benny's debut on the Canada Dry program in May of 1932 is probably the oldest. Although I have been adding some episodes of the syndicated program Police Headquarters dated from 1932 so some of them might be older than the Benny Show.

The "newest" is probably the Sherlock Holmes I play from time to time from the BBC with Carleton Hobbs from 1964.

Did anyone else hear it too??????

On the second episode of Dimension X this week (and OF COURSE I was listening ;o) they played a few bars of music between acts that we've heard over and over on another one of our favorites here on OTR...

Anyone else know which one? That's right, it's the same piece of music from Johnny Dollar! If you haven't heard it yet, listen again to the episode called "Hello Tomorrow" (the second in the set of 3 Dimension X).

And Greg.....THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for all the "X" this week!!

Hi, Margolane! Yes, I recognized the music in one of the three episodes of "Dimension X" --- it was our boy Johnny Dollar. I smiled when I heard that. Like you, I also loved the 3 episodes of DX Greg chose --- I even taped on my "old-fashioned" cassette deck them and will listen to them on my way to wherever. The DX 3 episodes were on at 8 PM Thurs., 6/25/09 ... for which I was extremely grateful because I didn't feel like watchng the NON-STOP coverage of Michael Jackson's death (the coverage is still going on , by the way --- 3 days later!).
Hey, Gang - looks like Greg "Santa Clause Ho-Ho-Ho Merry Christmas" Bell is going to present "Christmas in July" next month. Can't wait --- I really enjoy that. When it's 85 degrees with a 90-percent humidity, it's nice to hear ho-ho-ho shows! So, Merry Christmas, 6 months early.
If anyone prays out there, please remember me --- I'm STILL looking for a job and still hoping and praying to get the job for which I applied at Barnes & Noble. They haven't called and that doesn't bode well since the new store is opening in October. I'm almost afraid to call for fear of what I'll hear but I need to be brave if the manager says, "We're sorry but we decided not to hire you" or however they'll put it. If that's the case, then I'll just have to star over and keep on plugging away...

Hi, Gang! News -- and NOT about Michael Jackson! Seriously, I discovered a website I hope you'll love as much as I do! It's the National Radio Hall of Fame (website: www.radiohof.org). On this site, you can see past inductees plus you can vote for this year's favorites. One of the "candidates" is "SUSPENSE"! So I encourage you to vote -- I'd love to see "Suspense" on the list of programs inducted into the 2009 Hall of Fame. Past inductees include Abbott & Costello, Eve Arden, Gale Gordon, Orson Welles (!), "The Shadow," etc. Definitely worth a check-out. I do believe William Conrad, John Dehner, VIrginia Gregg and Joseph Kearns as well as "The Whistler" should be nominated then inducted ... in fact, I think I shall suggest it (but I'll double-check first just in case I missed their names on the list). Enjoy! PS: I may even suggest Greg Bell!

Rosemary,

Don't forget to tell everyone to also click on this page
http://www.museum.tv/rhofsection.php?page=394 when they visit the Radio Hall of Fame, as it is so rare to get me into a tux!

Also thank you so much for the kind card! I didn't forget, just much too busy once again.

Greg.

Before I purchased Sirius Radio, I had to survive on the channels that I could receive on "skip" wave. It is such a joy to listen to the old time shows on satelite radio. I plug in my head phones and drift off to sleep and the next morning I wake up to another one of the great radio broadcasts of the past.
Thank you so much for the work you do and the effort you devote to putting your program over the airwaves.

I would rate this as a four out of five!!

Keep up the great work you do. I will visit time and time again onto your web page.

Really enjoyed THE QUIZ KIDS this week. By the way, when the veteran kid was doing his remote shout-out to all the other alumni, he mentioned he bumped into his fellow quiz kid Robert Easton Burke out in Hollywood. Well, that Quiz Kid became Robert Easton, a venerable character actor and dialectician. On screen, he played mostly hillbillies. But off-camera he was known as the "Henry Higgins of Hollywood" and coached actors in myriad dialects for decades. Easton made many appearances on THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JOHNNY CARSON.

One of Easton's early "Adult" radio roles was next door meighbor Lester Nelson on the 15-minute version of NBC's Fibber McGee and Molly..Am listening to the early 1954 episodes now..Pretty fun actually, even with the time and cast limitations...

I'm a little behind on my listening and just tonight listened to the first part of the Superman special. I was however a little disappointed when the didn't finish the first part of the Superman special with the Krytonite in the safe and Clark Kent told Lois Lane, and Mr. White about how superman got to earth. I was really getting into that episode. I wonder how it ended? Oh well, I'll survive.

Greg, is it possible to play the last part of that show. Also, please include the Kellogg's Pep commerials. I enjoyed them. I feel like I should wear the buttons of the comic strip players on my beenie or jacket.

Also, could you please pay maybe one episose of The Nat King Cole show. The man had a GREAT voice. Do you have the rights to it?
