Christmas In July - July 12th to July 18th 2009 on Radio Classics

If you haven't already visited the schedule page here are the printable schedules.

Sirius 118 XM 164 PDF Version and the Excel Version  or the direct link to the page HERE

Long time XM fans will know this annual tradition quite well by now, but for all of you Sirius 118 listeners - Christmas In July is a 7 year tradition where we take great holiday drama and comedy episodes and then feature them for an entire week as a way to cool off the summer a little bit. Every series broadcast from the 12th to the 18th of July will be from Christmastime. But don't be deceived, that aren't all full of holiday cheer, some are quite dark and even violent. Then again most will hopefully put a smile on your face.

NOT A FAN OF CHRISTMAS IN JULY - I recommend you spend some time on other channels during the week. My suggestion - Sirius XM Book Radio

(XM 163 - Sirius 117) which is much more than just books - as they also have contemporary radio dramas including The Twilight Zone and Harry Nile.

Meanwhile; annual highlights on Radio Classics include versions of both It's A Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street as well as Ronald Colman as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Speaking of that Dickens holiday classic story, we also will play various versions of it including ones from The Six Shooter, Duffy's Tavern and Richard Diamond, Private Detective.

Thank you for the annual Christmas in July. I look forward to it each year. This year especially as my Mother's cancer has returned and our family faces a very uncertain few months.

Greg, Just wanted you to know how much I enjoy Christmas in July!! I love Radio classics and listen to it everyday while at work. My favorites are Jack Benny, Bob Hope and Abbott & Costello. Everyone tells me I was born about 40 yrs later that I should have been (born in 1967) since I love all the old time shows. Keep up the great work.

Greg,

I also enjoy Christmas in July. I'm glad you've also programmed "Big Little Jesus" from Dragnet. I can't listen to ".22 Rifle for Christmas" without getting a lump in my throat. I'm sure you know that they did the "Big Little Jesus" twice on the Dragnet TV series - once with Ben Alexander (B/W) and later with Harry Morgan (Color). The same actor played the priest in each version.

For as many times as I have heard some of the other shows, it will be fun to hear them again.

Greg,

There is no doubt in *my* mind that old radio brings me a lot of joy. It is my default channel because it reminds me of when we lived in a country free of heavy handed government in our lives, but I am writing for another reason.

MikeR posted:

"Thank you for the annual Christmas in July. I look forward to it each year. This year especially as my Mother's cancer has returned and our family faces a very uncertain few months."

Mike, my wife's sister has Sarcoma cancer, had surgery and is now facing 18 weeks of chemo. I feel awful for her because she has been so generous to so many, including our daughters. So I set up a donation button on the website I made for my wife and her friends hand-made jewelry business. We received another $30.00 this morning! Every bit helps, especially just knowing someone cares. Mike, I hope your mother pulls through.

Is there something I can offer, some prayer I can say or something I can do? For all of us the evening comes, and who knows when, but while we are here we all need each others support, especially in times when our loved ones are in danger.

Keep up the great work Greg and best wishes to you MikeR,

Dave

Hi, Gang! Count me in as someone who also loves Christmas in July. I believe Greg played Orson Welles doing "A Christmas Carol" last year. But to think this year he'll have the Ronald Coleman version - Oh, YUMMY!!!
MikeR - I'll keep your mother in my prayers. I know how difficult this time will be. As long as you are with your Mom, you'll make it easier on her.
The picture of Edmund Gwynn as Kris Kringle reminds me of what a fine actor this man was. I first saw him in the 1944 classic, "The Keys of the Kingdom" with Gregory Peck, Vincent Price and Sir Cedric Hardwicke. If you didn't see this movie, by all means, do so; it was Gregory Peck's breakout role but everyone who was in he movie was outstanding. And even though the movie was outstanding, the book was even better. I know because I read every word. It's by A.J. Cronin.
I also love the Dragnet episode about the rifle. It's hard to listen to but it's very good. And Greg was smart to temper that sad one with the story about the missing statue of the Baby Jesus! Very sweet story. More later. Ho! Ho! Ho!
PS: Thanks, Greg, for playing the Sir Cedric Harewicke episode of"Suspense" last week. He's also someone I've always loved - he was in SO many movies - "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," the aforementioned "The Keys of the Kingdom" and even "The Ten Commandments (which you didn't mention, Greg...tsk, tsk). He wrote an autobiography titled "A Victorian in Orbit." And his son Edward Hardwicke was the 2nd person to play Dr. JOhn Watson in the 1980s-1990s production of "Sherlock Holmes" wich starred Jeremy Brett (the late, GREAT JB)

Greg - This week was outstanding, especially "Hell on Ice," which I loved but could only listen to once because it was so sad. I also loved, loved LOVED "Night Fall," which scared me silly. I found "Tale of 2 Cities" a bit convoluted but I suspect it's something I have to really listen to. I read the book when I was in 10th grade and it was convoluted even then so I suspect it's the reader and not the radio show!
I even enjoyed "Fibber McGee & Molly" and I love "Wallace Wimple" (Bill Thomas).
I think the best thing this week, Greg, was the fact that you were an absolute FONT of information, even featuring bits on the aforementioned Mr. Thomas.
I got a kick of of Jack and the Gang in Waukeegan, Il. Very funny. And I always LOVE Rochester.
Oh, and before I forget - thanks for "The Pistol Shot." I'm not as familiar as perhaps I should be with Alexander Pushkin but thanks to you, I'll add him to my library! Looking forward to "Christmas in July." Happy Ho-Ho!

Greg,

You must be the hardest working man in radio! With all the trivia, facts and nostalgic information makes me think you really love your job! I beg to differ with a couple of postings though:

A. You are not a "font" of information, but a veritable FOUNT is more like it.

B. I don't believe that HALF of your listeners "tune out" during this time; just look at the postings and that ought to be a pretty good litmus test as to your listening base. I think one half of one percent is more like the amount of those who are raisin-faced prudes that can't stand people having a little fun. They are probably are SO anal that only dogs can hear them fart!

BTW, do you EVER take time off? Maybe yo do after all. Heck, you probably record all the shows in one night and have the rest of the week off! Just kidding you boy.

We all love you Greg. HEY EVERYONE, LETS HAVE AN OLD RADIO SHOW PICNIC!

Gotta run of to work... yes on Sunday, cuz the homeowner is due back tomorrow night...

Thanks for the great show Greg,

Dave.... I think your comments were a little harsh. I don't believe Margo meant a literal half of the listeners. I think she mean the people on the other end of the spectrum from the yule festers. Regardless, I do not consider myself or Margo raisin faced prudes. At my age I may be a bit sun-dried, but as a life-long Lux girl, I am sure Cecil B. Put me down in the negative column, I don't like Christmas in July. Save it for December.

I also don't like the weekly schedule changes. Who has time to download a schedule every week? If you must continue the format please give some thought to when you repeat the shows. For example, don't air a program during the morning commute hours and re-air it during afternoon commute hours.

Christmas in July has ha huge advantage for me. With all of the activities in December I am not listening or paying attention to the XM radio.

JP...I tend to agree with the commute schedule. I am in the car from 7-8am eastern time and 5-6pm eastern time.

I usually switch between XM163 Book Radio, XM140 ESPN (daughter works for them remember Greg?) and my nasty favorite XM41 Hair Nation (because I tried and failed to be a successful Hair Band guitarist).

I did hear the Gunsmoke episode The Cabin for the first time. Greg, how many Gunsmokes do you have?

Hi, Gang!
Dave - Thank you for the correction --- it was I who called Greg a "font" of information. I was mistaken - fount is correct and is what I meant. By the way, I do enjoy Christmas in July but I understand those who may not "get it" or appreciate it. To each his own, I say! (I could have done away with the comments about "prudes" and dog farts but I won't stop reading your commentary; you are very entertaining)
Margolane: I love you dearly but I disagree with you and all the others who don't like "Christmas in July." I like it exactly for the reason Greg intended - to remind us of the cold and of the goodness of Christmas in the height of the hot summertime (which, for some reason, isn't so bad this year ... global warming? BAH)
Greg - tell your wife you HAVE MY HEART for this year's Christmas in July. At noon, I heard Bing Crosy narrating "Small One" and I had tears in my eyes because the story was so touching. So thank you for that! And thank you for nearly everything you've aired this week. As usual, Greg, you've done a spectacular job!

I'll own that, the egg is on my face. My regrets for not reading my post before hitting the "save comment" button. The cause? I had been working for two weeks straight without time off and doing so in intractable pain. So, my bad, sorry Greg, Margo, et.al... For the record I'm 50 and ought to know better.

Although I'm not trying to make excuses for my post, but another reason "might be" is that I was once in an on-line debate forum for a long time and we learned to take laser swords to cut the legs out from under anyone who opposed our views. It was all in the spirit of fun because we would often meet later for a beer and laugh at each others points of view. I'm new here and due to the blasting I got from some of you I completely "get it" now and I'll be civil and kind and promise to help old ladies across the street from now on.

Please forgive?

I always record shows to listen to in the car to and from work but, especially since the schedule has expanded, I never get to listen to all the shows available in a week. I took Christmas in July as an opportunity (since it feels like December was practically yesterday and I just heard all the Christmas shows) to record extra last week to listen to this week.

Now I read all of the comments about new shows, Suspense, etc. and I feel like I'm missing something. I better start listening to Christmas in July.

Hi Gang,

Thank you Matt, Rosemary and anyone else who has my back on this. I don't want to stray off topic of this forum but I'll answer one thing (BTW, yes, watched Desi & Lucy, Red, and all the oldies, most which were in re-run at my age) buy Rosemary asked:

"Why on earth are you working so hard?"

Well, always have but right now I need two surgeries to mend my neck and spine, damaged by, hard work... duh. But in order to pay the costs of this while I'm "down" I need to make as much money as possible, and being self employed, that means nobody is going to work for me and I have no "sick time" to fall back on. Over ten years ago I faced financial ruin due to a criminal and have struggled every day to restore my credit standing to sterling and I don't want to lose that.

Besides my regular job, I run two web sites, have a small farm to keep going, do all the mechanical work on the 3 classic cars I own and drive, the tractor and the farm truck and keep the house, irrigation and out buildings in shape because, I'm the builder. There is a lot on my plate!

All this with spinal and neck damage that causes such incredible pain I could bite through a leather boot. I have to get these surgeries done soon as I am losing the use of my arms, one eye and one leg. So there you have it.

On topic, I hope there is a heaven where all the gang is there. I want to live forever in the 50's, driving a 59 Cadillac convertible in Las Vegas, with a couple of wild gals hootin' and hollerin' through the night air, cruising down a desert highway. I would love to live during the heyday and experience freedom in this country again. Smoke anywhere I damn well please and it was okay to have "one for the road" without getting harassed. (I'm not advocating driving drunk, just asking for some common sense.)

Thank you all and if you have time, I urge you to click on the flag beside my name and it will take you to one of the websites I'm constantly working on. I think you will like it!

Warmest regards,

Dave

Terri - I sympathize with your inability to listen to all the available shows each week. That's the big problem I have with the expanded schedule as well. I finally had to make a list of shows I was willing to skip and one of absolute "must-hears". It's a shame - previously I could listen to all the shows in a given week. Now, many only air twice during daytime/early evening hours in the whole week. Miss those and it's a year before they're back again. As much as I enjoy old radio shows, trying to actually find them is starting to feel more like work than recreation.

Otherwise, I don't mind the "Christmas in July" week. I just wish we didn't hear "It's Christmas in July Week" so often. It's said before every show, and also in the middle of most of them. So, it's being said roughly every 15 minutes. That's a little much.

I really enjoy listening to Old Time Radio Classics on XM164. I was reading some of the comments made about trying to listen to ALL the shows on the schedule. I am a little different about how I listen. I never print the schedule or even look at it. As I go about my day-to-day routine I turn to 164 when I can. That way I can be 'surprised' when I tune in. There is probably something psycologically revealing about the way we all listen. But I don't have time to figure it out. I have to get back to listening to Radio City Playhouse.

I've been listening to XM 164 since-- well since the beginning. Thank God it's Friday night already, and only one more day of Christmas in July. It gets more tedious every year. As I've stated many times, I like Christmas (my favorite holiday), but not in July. I'm grateful this year that next week is not Christmas in July, since I will be travelling to a place where I don't sleep well, and will log in many overnight hours listening to XM. I can almost handle the Fibber shows, Jack Benny, and some of the others, but PLEASE-- no more weird stuff about Christmas carols-- and no more Bing Crosby crooning Jingle Bells in July. No more weird esoteric Christmas stuff in July. I pay my dues year after year just like everyone else, and I still have to endure this travesty. Yeah, it's only a week--but to a person who relies on XM164 for several hours a day, it's just a really tough time. I know it's futile, and I know I'll write this same stuff next year, but please....gimme a break with the Christmas in July. It serves NO PURPOSE!!! Greg, I think you do this just to spite listeners like me. NO-- I'm not going to try to explore other channels.

Hi, Greg! I have to tell you I disagree with Glenn almost 100 percent, even though he writes a nice letter. I'm almost sad to know Christmas in July will end in a little more than 4 hours - this is the best it has ever been (even though it's only my 2nd one). Your selections this year were wonderful - the comedies were super funny, the suspenses were really suspenseful and yet all were touching and well done. I'm NOT saying this because I'm your #1 fan ... though everyone knows this is true. You also know when I don't like something --- I never learned how to keep my feelings to myself though I suppose I ought to! This year, as I just said, was particularly good! I can't wait until next year. Oh, and let me say - I prefer the whole week of wall-to-wall Christmas --- no "halvsies!" (If you never played "Jacks," then you may not be familiar with "onesies, twosies, threesees, etc). Anyway, let me add the episode of "Gunsmoke" titled "The Cabin" was one of the best "Gunsmoke" episodes I"ve ever heard and NOT just because John Dehner was in it. (William Conrad should be ASHAMED for stabbing Mr. Dehner in the heart with a pitchfork!). With that, I shall leave. I'm listening to "The Greatest Story Ever Told: Flight into Egypt." Very good. By the way, DEAR Greg (when I say that, you must know I want something...) can you air more "Family Theater" and shows like that? Also, have you ever thought of airing "One Man's Family"? I know there are at least 3,412 episodes but I'd still like to hear it...I've never heard it. Take care - From Rosemary, Your Friend and #1 Fan. PS: How are the plans for the observance of Arch Obelor's 100th birth anniversary coming??? MANY MARATHONS, I hope! We can spend the entire week being scared ... witless! I know it's not until December but I'm really looking forward to that. Do you know Mr. Obelor was only 5 feet 1 inch tall??? Yet such a mind! It's so much like Rod Serling - he was only 5'4"! They both make me feel tall --- I'm only 4'9! Still, I got into the Navy and was in the Reserves for 10 years!

I echo the comments of most of the others now that the series is over. And, hard to believe it IS already July. However, that's tempered because at least on TV because the Christmas commercials begin in mid-October. Actually, they've begun already for some of the biggie retailers.

Pluralistic society America may now be - I believe playing these old radio classics shows how far America has come..................downward.

Wow! Some really nice photos. I am enamoured by the sheer beauty of these black and white photos. The clarity and depiction of photos in black and white cannot be found in colored ones. Your show must have been really great. I am so sorry, I missed it.

Who doesn't love Christmas??? unless he is moron! I love Christmas, it is the day of our savior Jesus Christ and a special season were we could have family bondings and get together. The story of "A Wonderful life" is really awesome and we can learn many things from it.
