Radio Classics Week of July 26th to August 1st, 2009.

Sirius 118 XM 164 PDF Version and the Excel Version  or the direct link to the page HERE

We are marking the 79th anniversary of the debut of The Shadow with a 2 hour special. Four episodes including two new ones featuring Orson Welles then Bill Johnstone, John Archer and Bret Morrison taking turns as Lamont Cranston aka "The Shadow".

We also have a birthday week tributes to Gracie Allen as well as featuring Lucille Ball in a Lux Radio Theatre version of her 1946 film noir thriller, The Dark Corner.

Still with us, acclaimed film writer/director Blake Edward is 87 on the 26th of July and we'll play two of his radio scripts; Richard Diamond, Private Detective and The Lineup.

Finally we have an hour long CBS Radio Workship version of Aldous Huxley's futuristic story, A Brave New World.

Next week's schedule looks great. Can't believe it's the Shadow's 79th anniversary!

I like all the programming and the great background info. I was going to complain about Christmas in July but then I heard the Jack Benny episode and all was forgiven. A thousand thanks for getting rid of those horrible scam commercials telling me I don't have to pay my credit card bills. The period commercials are interesting but you could cut back a bit and
aybe restore some of the musical interludes from the Sirius days. Anyhow keep up the good work!

I too am glad to be rid of the scam credit commercials and, earlier, the internal cleansing ads (that stuff is dangerous and should not be aired anywhere).
The schedule does look great next week - I LOVE "Brave New World." I have it on CD and cassette but I'll still listen...I've noticed there's something special about hearing something on the radio; even if you have productions of a show, hearing it on the airwaves makes it more special! So I'll be a happy camper!
By the way, Greg - did you ever find "Johnny Quinn, USN"? I have a tape of it and it's wonderful, though very sad. You might want to play it during Pearl Harbor Day week; it stars Olivia de Havilland and is about Pearl Harbor. More later...right now, I'm watching EWTN, which has a segment on another passion of mine --- Gregorian Chant.

Hurray for The Shadow anniversary special! As well as the extra Shadows in the schedule. Thanks for a great-looking week, Greg! I also enjoyed the "new to the channel" Shadow episode this week. Rosemary, I agree about there being something special about hearing an epsiode "live." Besides, now when I listen to a recording, I'm always waiting for Greg to come on with his commentary and disappointed when I remember it's not XM! Smile

I will admit, after hearing them all....Bill Jonhstone is my favorite "Shadow". While I appreciate all the others and respect Orson's stardom.....I just like the way Johnstone portrays the part. Most convincing and grasping to me.

still not thrilled with Christmas in july. you do a superb job of hosting the show and it is apparent you really do your research. if you ever decide to do a jack benny DAY i'll vote for that. imagine 24hrs of jack and the gang.

I heartily agree with "acmesurplus". Bill Johnstone is also my favorite "Shadow"! I like the way you phrased it because while the other actors are commendable they are just not quite the same. Besides enjoying Johnstone's portrayal of Cranston, I also like the way he seems to relish saying, "Men call me . . . The Shadow!" Marjorie Anderson is also my favorite Margot Lane, and I think Johnstone and Anderson together made a great team.

Hey Greg,

Is there any chance of getting any Dick Tracy radio shows? His rise to fame certainly took in all the mediums of the day; comic strip, radio and movies. Turner Classic Movies just ran a mini marathon of the movies and were they ever neat!

Well I spoke too soon, the scam commercials are back. Can't you find legitimate sponsors if you must run ads? I am a Sirius subscriber and we did not have these scam ads before the merger. I'm glad to have Greg on the channel with his creatve programming and interesting commentary, but the scam ads are definitely unwelcome.

Never too many Shadow episodes. Thanks Greg. I do love Orson Wells, but I agree - Bill Johnstone is my favorite - he has just the right tone to his, "I am the Shadow."

When it comes to the Shadow I like Orson Wells, If you can find Death from the Deep that was the first show I ever heard when I started colecting radio shows on tape when I was in high school (the company was Radio Reruns). Richard Dimond is my favorite when it comes to Detectives. I enjoy the show for its tounge in cheek style I can see where Blake Edwards had a hand in it

I have to laugh when I hear the term new because when ever I listen to a show like "The Shadow" or "Fibber McGee & Molly", I thiink "Oh great it's not a repeat." The I think well "Duh, they are all repeats, I've just never heard the show before." I know I'm not the only person who has thought that.

It's hard to believe most of these talented people are gone now, and it's too bad this type of entertainment isn't known too more people. I'm glad that we are all getting a taste of this entertainment that I think we are very LUCKY to have.

Hi, Gang! My computer had fits and starts Saturday; I had written an idea but the machine froze so the idea went into the Twilight Zone. Anyway, the idea - which some of you caught - was to have a "contest" on who is your favorite Shadow portrayer and the winner gets a couple of segments. For instance, I'm a devotee of Orson Welles (anyone who reads my missives knows Orson - and Bill Conrad and John Dehner - have my heart)so I'd vote for him. But lots of you like Bill Johnstone. What thinks you, Greg? Possible "Shadow" contest?
Shows were great last week - I really liked "A Different Kind of Treasure" with Walter Brennan. If my memory serves me correctly, he and Jack Benny were born in the same year (1894) and died in the same year (1974). Many younger readers may remember Walter from "The Real McCoys" but I never liked that show. I liked Walter better in "Pride of the Yankees" (he played Blake, the reporter) and "Sergeant York." (Both pictures starred Gary Cooper).
To you new listeners, make sure to stay tuned - Greg has so much information he could write his own OTR Book (you should, Greg).
Thanks for the Gracie Allen special. She died 27 years earlier than my mother but on the same day - 8/27. So Gracie now has a special place in my heart.
Oh, and THANKS SO MUCH FOR "BRAVE NEW WORLD"! I have it on tape AND CD but for some reason, it's more "fun" to hear it on the radio. And it features one of my heartthrobs - the aforementioned William Conrad. And speaking of Mr. Conrad --- the "Home Surgery" episode of "Gunsmoke" is amazing ... and somewhat accurate. The west and rural areas didn't have anesthesia then, hence the use of "corn" to "alleviate" pain. They also were not totally aware of asepsis - prevention of infection (though they may have had some idea because Matt kept telling Tara to have plenty of boiling water on hand). There's a book I'm dying to read titled "Frontier Medicine" about just such things. The history of medicine is one of my passions.
More later, Gang! Enjoy your day whatever it's like outside. And God bless and Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.
PS: Greg is right - we really do have a nice community on this blog. I love it. Special HI to Karen B who came up with the Orson or Bill "Shadow" "contest" and, as always, to "the lovely" margolane, as well as to the disabled couple who love the comedies and to all the truck drivers ... God bless Y'all!

Correct me if I am worng on this Greg...I don't think we have a choice on those credit commercials. They have the cash and are willing to spend it. I don't hear too many other companies stepping up to pay for commercial time. I did not think Greg was responsible for the selling of commercial airtime.

Maybe Blackstone can come out of retirement and debunk them. I often have to pause my XM for 15 minutes when I get in the car for voicemails and such so I get to advance through many of the commercials. It buys me a hour for my commute. At the end of the 164 shows there are usually a few minutes where I can go to ESPN 140 and Hair Nation 41 and escape the commercials.

I was thinking of trying Rosetta Stone for kicks...all I know for a language is English and some Brooklyn, NY dialects....

Hi there Rosemary! Glad to see you back!

What do you know about any of the radio actors that played Dick Tracy? John Dehner has the sort of voice that might make a good Tracy. I hope we will get to hear a few episodes if they are available to Greg.

Loved the Shadow marathon today and I'm looking forward to Brave New World tomorrow. Hope I'm finished in the garden by the time it's on tomorrow -- between blistering hot weather and then cooler/rain today, I've got work to do that's been piling up and has to be done while the weather is cooperating! ;o)

I enjoyed "A Brave New World", but toward the end, the newspapers and reporters did not fit the story.

Since everyone was preconditioned for happiness in their predetermined roles, and they were also conditioned as to their likes and emotions, newspapers would not exist because papers would deter people from their happiness.

All in all, it was an excellent story, that would fit today as well as 100 years ago.
