Angels With Dirty Faces, A Star Is Born, New Stuff from Suspense, Our Miss Brooks, Richard Diamond, Duffy's Tavern and Much More

by gregbell 9/30/2009 11:47:00 AM

Here is schedule for the week of October 4th - October 10th, 2009.

Sirius 118 XM 164 PDF Version and the Excel Version or the direct link to the page HERE

In the hour long films-adapted-for-radio category we bring back a great 1939 version of the James Cagney-Pat O'Brien motion picture "Angels With Dirty Faces" as presented on Lux Radio Theatre. Also from Lux - we mark Janet Gaynor's birthday week with a 1937 version of "A Star Is Born"

Also on tap - big screen actress Miriam Hopkins in a 1950 episode of Suspense known as "The Rose Garden" and Dick Powell as Richard Diamond, Private Detective tries to solve "The Bill Kirby Murder Case".

And yes, a lot of fun new-to-the-channel-this-week comedy episodes.

The first picture is a great photo sent to me by listener Jim In San Diego.

More Photos: Pat O'Brien & James Cagney (Angels With Dirty Faces); Janet Gaynor (A Star Is Born)

Photos: Miriam Hopkins (with Herbert Marshall in Trouble In Paradise); Dick Powell (with French actress Micheline Cheirel in Cornered) Thanks to Listener Jim H. who named the actress and the movie.

According to Wikipedia (and they cite the local newspaper from Oct 1880), Damon Runyan was actually born in Oct of 1880 rather than 1884. Wow, 129 years ago! Greg, I wonder who the OLDEST, or person born the earliest in time, is of the OTR regulars?

Thank you, Greg, for your information on William Conrad. It was neat to learn he had married Chet Huntley's widow. I remember Chet Huntley and I always liked him. I had been under the mistaken impression that Mr. Conrad had been a life-long batchelor; how wrong I was and how happy I was to learn the truth.
I know I thanked you before but I want to thank you again for all the wonderful William Conrad programs you've had on this week and last to honor him on what would have been his 89th birthday. It's too bad his son, Chris, couldn't contact you to thank you. I guess not everyone is as wild about Classic Radio as we! I have to remind myself these great actors are in that Great Radio Studio in the Sky because sometimes I feel absolutely compelled to write to them to tell them how terrific a show and/or performance was. Well, I can't do that but I can tell you, Greg, and I can share with the rest of our "gang." What a marvelous thing this blog system is! Thank you for that, too!

Thanks Greg for everything! I am listening to The Green Hornet now. I can't believe you can't play The Lone Ranger anymore. Oh well their loss.

Rosemary.... did you notice our hero John Dehner managed to
take a seat next to Georgia Ellis (Miss Kitty) at the Gunsmoke Rehearsal? Miss Ellis is all smiles as the Dashing Frontier Gentleman focuses his attention on her.

Hi, Jim in San Diego - I noticed JD was sitting next to "Miss Kitty" but his face is blocked partially. Oh, well - it was nice to see him included. And the picture is neat (thanks, Greg) because we can see a radio rehearsal in progress.
Hey, Gang - what thinks youi of "The Yellow Bowl" - this week's "Dimension X" presentation? What a great story - thanks, again, Greg. And thanks, also, for a new episode of "Our Miss Brooks," which I think is becoming my favorite comedy show. Jack Benny this week was especially funny, too. And I even liked the Richard Diamond episode. Peggy Webber as the elderly Mrs. Kirby was marvelous. More later!

Wow great picture Jim! Love it because I love Gunsmoke so much.

My wife and kids went on a road trip to Folkston, Georgia to watch trains this weekend and we had one of my favorite Suspense episodes, "The Hitchhiker" on my Inno. Coming up from Florida, there are a lot of back country roads and we were arriving after dark and it really set the mood.

It amazes me that no one who broadcast that episode in 1942 could probably ever have imagined, someone listening to the broadcast 67 years in the future! While we probably all pine for the days of Old Time Radio, its sure nice to have the technology to still enjoy it!

Also another instance of technology meeting nostalgia, I now have the theme to Suspense as my cell ringtone!

Hey folks, what about James Cagney.

He has quite the reputation for a perfect gangster. Anyone catch his show this week?

Matt Pelc: Thanks for the great story about listening
to "The Hitchhiker" while driving through lonely country
roads in north Florida and on into Georgia.

There's a reason why the South produces writers like
James Dickey, Robert Penn Warren, Willa Cather, Calder
Willingham and Thomas Wolfe (either one). Those lonley,
Southern country places are unlike anywhere else in
America, and those sages reflect them in their work.

Glad you liked the Gunsmoke cast photo. How I envy
John Dehner talking with George Ellis. I could listen
to her read names from the phone book and enjoy it.

Great photos and great programing. What a break for one's sanity in today's world of realism TV. These old radio programs are fantastic and bring back such great memories.
