Here is schedule for the week of Sept 20th - September 26th, 2009

Sirius 118 XM 164 PDF Version and the Excel Version or the direct link to the page HERE

In a two hour Jack Benny special, the radio funny guy pokes fun at Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs and Jack & The Beanstalk. He also imitates the Bob Hope Show (with Phil Harris as Vera Vague!)

A 23 year old Orson Welles takes on the role of Arthur Conan Doyle's famed detective in Mercury Theatre On The Air's "Immortal Sherlock Holmes" from September of 1938.

And Johnny Dollar is back with the five part Cronin Matter storyline covering about an hour and a quarter.

The Jack Benny cast, 1947. From left: Sara Berner (one of Jack's telephone operators), Artie Auerbach ("Mr. Kitzel"), Frank Nelson, Mel Blanc, Dennis Day, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Jack, Mary, Phil Harris, Don Wilson, Bea Benadaret (as the other telephone operator.)

That's a marvelous photo of Jack Benny's cast. Poor Monsieur
Le Blanc, Jack's violin instructor, has to cover his ears as
Jack once again puts bow to strings.

Baby Boomers will remember Bea Benadaret for 2 TV series...
as nosy next-door neighbor Blanche on "Burns & Allen" and
as lovable hotel operator Kate on "Petticoat Junction".
She still had that high-pitched, trademark giggle.

Greg, thanks so much for the photo of the Jack Benny cast. It's good to put a face with the voice. The Jack Benny show is one of my favorites on XM 164. Keep up the great work. Thanks, Tammy

Don Wilson looks like a pretty big guy.

Great photos once again Greg.

During this morning's Whisperer episode did I hear Bill Conrad as the bar tender?

Jack Benny and crew Pic is great!!! Can now see why they used to pick on Don about being a "BIG" man, I had thought he was a bit more portly but it looks like he was a rather tall man as well! You're doing a great job, Greg!!! XM164 is my favorite channel!!

Another tidbit...when I was growing up in the 60's (pre-cable), my mom was big on her "stories" in the afternoon. Larry Haines played for many years and Mary Stewart's husband on Search for Tomorrow (15 and 30 minute versions on CBS).

Great as always Greg. Keep up the good work. I remember Vinton Hayworth as he played Gen Schaeffer on I dream of Jeannie.
Bea Benaderet played Mrs. Carstairs on Fibber McGee and Molly and the voice of Betty Rubble on the Flintstones in addition to her many other roles.

Jack's not kidding, Don Wilson is a big guy. While some of the comedy from Old Time Radio, Jack is still very funny.

Hi, Gang! I'm with you in praising Greg for the pic of Jack and the cast. My favorite (besides, Jack & Mary, of course) was Frank Nelson. I remember him on "I Love Lucy." I mean, how many people do you know could get an hysterical, belly laugh from one word ("YES"????). I love it when he does that.
I love Dennis Day's voice, too. And I've come to adore Phil Harris, "Remley" and the bar 'n booze jokes.
Looks like a terrific week, by the way. Thanks again, Greg!
Georgene - I do the same thing - I turn on my radio at night and just let myself fall asleep. When I wake up in the night, it's neat to hear either "Gunsmoke," anything with John Dehner or William Conrad, or something scary by Arch Oboler. (DEC 7 = Arch's 100th birthday. Next Sunday - 9/27 = Bill Conrad's birthday).

Hi Rosemary

I am a big fan of "Lights Out". It is amazing to me to hear some of the stories he came up with. What an imagination and a lot of talent that man had. I can't wait to see the line-up when we celebrate his B-day in December. I get the shivers just thinking about some of the stories I have heard.

Hi,Gang! Lana - I agree with you 100 percent RE: Lights Out! I wake up in the middle of the night and if that show is on, my eyeballs end up on stalks and yet I can't bear to turn the radio off! How sick is that?! I also can't wait for the Birthday Bash.
Hey, Greg (and gang) - I may not get to listen as much as I do now --- I finally have a job at Barnes & Noble. Got it today after waiting 6 months for it! Will start a week from Monday. Part-time at first, then full-time if they like my work.
Meant to tape "The Horn Blows at Midnight" but I was out and by the time I got back, I missed most of it and 1 PM today was the last time it's on for this year. Oh, well. Did I also tell you how much I LOVE "Phantom of the Opera" with Basil Rathbone? I also love that edition of "Dragnet" titled "The Big Present." What terrific productions they both are. More later! Happy listening, everybody!

Loving "Dragnet" as I do, I caught my first "Pat Novak" with Jack Webb the other day. WOW!!! The inuendos, metaphors, and similes. Terrific. Every sentence is a "... like a cat walking on fog.." stuff. You can just SEE things they way they put it. In fact, afterwards Greg said something like ".. what great dialog..". That put it mildly.

It's just a small sample of why we just love OTR.

Great stuff this week,GB! You are so right about Pat Novak --- it's terrific writing and story and I'm so glad you play it. KEEP IT UP!
IOU a special thanks for the 2-week WILLIAM CONRAD birthday celebration. That was such a pleasant surprise - first seeing next week's 2-hour marathon and then hearing you tell us there will be lots of WC this week. This is terrific - between him and John Dehner, I don't know how radio would have gotten on without them. I wonder if there are any biographies on these 2?
More later. Thanks for all you do, Greg!

Greg - sorry to hear about the the mixed reviews on Crime and Peter Chambers. While it's not Radio Hall of Fame material, I do enjoy the contrast in the relationship between Chambers and Lieutenant Parker vs., say, Richard Diamond and Lieutenant Levinson or Boston Blackie and Inspector Faraday. Considering that it premiered in the waning days of the GAOR, when writers, actors and especially money were deserting the medium for television, it's pretty good. That said, I would definitely rank it below Barry Craig, Let George Do It, The Adventures of the Falcon, and Nick Carter, among other contemporary private detective series. And it avoids the often-annoying cuteness of a Mr. and Mrs. North.

I'll have to give "Crime & Peter Chambers" more of a chance - it's OK --- not great but not bad. I'm more of a "Dragnet" fan myself. It's funny I should say that because I know Dane Clark's movie work and he was also good as a guest star. But I think his character tries to be smooth but it doesn't quite work. He doesn't have the same glib sophistication as Dick Powell's Richard Diamond/Richard Rogue though I think it's what he's trying for. It's no reflection on Dane Clark; if C&PC is on, I won't turn it off. But, unlike anything with John Dehner or William Conrad, I won't go out of my way to listen to it. It may grow on me - there's always hope - after all, PHil Harris has certainly grown on me and, at the start of my revived listening to Classic Radio, I couldn't stand him! (I still don't get Fred Allen and I detest "Baby Snooks" and "The Bickersons" but, as I said, I do love Phil Harris and Alice Faye and, especially, Phil and Remley together.)

Hi Greg,

Just wanted to say thank you for your work and that your work has grown on me after my initial feelings after missing the more regular schedule of the previous Sirius version and missing less commentary. I still miss hearing some of my favorites more regularly (mysteries and Westerns) but I like some of the new variety as well, such as the increased "Johhny Dollar" episodes, the plays and movies (like "Strike Up the Band" and the theme hours and such. Smile

I will just throw into the customer suggestion box that it *would* be nice to occasionally integrate times when you'd play a couple/few shows in a row without commentary until afterward (or commenting ahead of time) in order to help us listeners enjoy a more authentic "old time" listening experience in which we'd only hear the shows and vintage commercials for a short bit, rather than shows immediately followed by modern-day commentary. Your commentary can be interesting and informative Smile, but immersing oneself in the shows (and vintage commercials) for a bit adds to feeling of being transported back in time to a peaceful listening experience and away from the modern times for just a short bit. Smile

Anyway, overall, thanks again for a better-than-expected setup. I still very much enjoy listening to the station, including some of the background information that you provide. Smile

Thanks and best wishes,
Cate Smile
