Halloween Week Schedule

by gregbell 10/20/2009 12:59:00 PM

First of all - if you haven't visited the schedule page this week, here are the links for the schedule for the week of:

October 25th to October 31st (Halloween) 2009

Sirius 118 XM 164 PDF Version and the Excel Version or the direct link to the page HERE

Okay, as I mentioned in the previous post, we are unable to play War of the Worlds this year, but we have plenty of replacements from humor to horror.

We'll have the debut episode of Mercury Theatre On The Air from July of 1938 as Orson Welles and his talented cast present "Bram Stoker's Dracula".

Suspense presents an hour long version of Curtis Siodmak's science fiction horror story Donovan's Brain. We'll have the 1948 version with John McIntire, Jeanette Nolan and Wally Maher hosted by Robert Montgomery.

I have brought back part of the 2004 Hermit's Cave special with four episodes for a two hour special.

Also we have Frankenstein, The Werewolf, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as well as multiple episodes of Lights Out

The Halloween Humor is provided by Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Fibber McGee & Molly, Ozzie & Harriet, Father Knows Best, My Favorite Husband, etc.

Greg: Enjoy my satellite radio and it plays channel 164 most of the time. Couple of questions. 1) I hear no Amos N' Andy; any particular reason why?? I have a lot of cds and their humor is great, perhaps not so PC for today. Secondly, do you know of any films of any of any actual radio programs? I have a lot of CDs/tapes and my grandchildren are becoming interested in them but they ask questions of "How" regarding sound effects, fights, horses etc etc etc> Any comments/advice appreciated. Heading to the Friends of Old Time Radio convention this saturday. Hope you all have heard the commercials! Really looking forward to meeting all the great folks like Elaine Hyman (the Lone Ranger), Shirley Mitchel (Great Gildersleeve), Tommy Cook (little Beaver on Red Ryder) and soo many others. Hope to see some of you there! (www.fotr.net)

Jerry, look on youtube. I know someone posted here a while ago a link to a video of the Jack Benny Show. so they do exist... but get the grandkids to answer their own question! Have them go around making sounds using and with different things to see what they can come up with! For example in Star Wars...that great sound when the lightsabers hit each other.... a Hammer on a high tension wire you see on telephone poles to stop them from falling over...

i LISTEN TO 164 99% of the time for the past 2 years, but i still have not gotten an answer to why the Lone Ranger and Sgt. Preston are no longer being aired.

Martin,

I am sorry. I have tried to mention it when I can and I always answer emails. The licensing rights owners of both The Lone Ranger and Sgt. Preston are not allowing them to play on satellite radio. Until they reach some type of agreement with our content provider we can't legally play them on the channel. I am sorry.

I have had my grandkids sit with me and watch old movies like Forbidden Planet, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, and the old Rod Sterling Twilight Zone episodes (I love DVD releases of these classics) and they seem to enjoy them. While Leslie Nielson can't hold up to a Transformer in our current hi-tech, no-story world it does seem that the kids like some of the old stuff. They do NOT buy into The Shadow and his ability to cloud men's minds. I guess you can't suspend all disbelief. The do like The Lone Ranger...sorry to open that wound.

And there is one more option...they are just humoring grandpa so they can pick up the change that falls from my pockets when I sit back in my recliner....oh well. In the car they are a captive audience so they have to sit through XM164 and The Shadow.

Jerry,

You may want to check out the FOTR (Friends of Old Time Radio) convention going on in Newark, NJ beginning today. There will be several recreations of programs which are quite well done. These are recorded and DVDs will be sold at very reasonable prices. Some of the recreations will include actors and actresses who performed in the 40's and 50's.

This schedule you are now doing is really not giving me a chance to hear the great detective stories that I like to listen to. They seem to come on very late at night or around 2 am. They also seem to play maybe twice during the week and then they are gone. Is there some reason for this? Also do you have any Wild Bill Hickok?

I, too, love Amos n Andy. We are a group of Schlockers who get together and watch really old monster movies. Then our Schlock leader brings out Amos n Andy and we are having a great time. I remember them on TV. I was just too young to remember them on radio.
One endearing show was the Christmas one. The meaning of the Lord's prayer brought wonderful tears to our eyes.
Find Amos n Andy ......
Am enjoying my 164 ...It is on 23 hrs. a day.....

Hi Donna,

I know that I would miss my favorite shows too, if I did not record them.
If you can afford it, it is ideal to purchase something that can record the shows.
Then you can listen whenever you want. Hope this helps.

Oh, Steve..
About Johnny Dollar, there were some episodes last week or the week before. I know they are not scheduled every week though.

Sometimes I really feel for you Greg. I have read the comments on this week and last week's post and I have come under the assumption than a lot of people are concerned about themselves. Its the Me mentality. People complain about too much comedy, about the way detectives being at different times, about no Lone Ranger and War of the Worlds or that there is not enough Johnny Dollar (which I think is on too much, but if I don't want to listen, I change the channel).

Let me say I hate the comedies, but when they are on I tune to 163, 165 or Alan Colmes on 168. It is what it is, I know I will eventually catch a western or a Suspense. I too am bummed about the Lone Ranger and War of the Worlds, but what can you do? I am sure Greg does all he can to bring us what we want. How many times does he have to answer people's questions about the Lone Ranger or try to talk people down from the ledge over too much of this or not enough of that.

If I were Greg I would be discouraged by the number of people that just come on here to complain. I just hope that is not the case.

I'm not at the convention because I'm on my feet all day at my new job and I want to give my feet a rest since I'm off today. Besides, I KNOW I'd spend a FORTUNE on classic radio shows.
I'd like to hear more Johnny Dollar. And I'll wait patiently while Greg works his magic on getting the powers-that-be to let him air "Lone Ranger" and CBS Radio Mystery Theater. I have the utmost faith in Greg; it's the "other side" that makes me aggravated for not letting us hear their shows.
Happy Halloween everybody! Greg's done a masterful job with the sked next week. Good BOOOOOOOO-yeeeeee!

Matt .... amen! We all have our wish lists. I'm sure Greg has his own preferences as well, but in the course of a day, there really is something for anyone who is into OTR. I listen exclusively to xm 164 and on tv I watch the nostalgia drama channel almost exclusively. It is what keeps me marginally sane.

Matt,

Thanks - I appreciate that - generally I keep in a pretty positive mood and don't let things get me down - when they do - I just listen to a little Pat Novak or Johnny Dollar. And all is well with the world once again.

Greg.

PS - I would have also mentioned Phil Harris or Jack Benny but I know how you feel about the comedies Smile

It was really interesting to listen to the "Suspense" episode "The Crowd" with Dana Andrews this week. While a fine, workmanlike piece of radio, It was significantly different than the Ray Bradbury short story. Unfortunately it did not capture the particular and unique horror of Ray's story, which is one of the great horror stories of the 20th century. I always keep an ear out for Ray Bradbury stuff on channel 164, much of it scripted by Bradbury, and much of it spot on in terms of tone and story. A favorite of mine is the version of Kaleidescope with Bill Conrad.

Greg, while I lived in LA in the 80s, along with hearing Bob Bailey hosting and old-time radio show on KPCC, KCRW used to play some BBC radio dramas. I realize that stuff from the BEEB may not fit into the Golden Age format, but are any of these, like Lord Peter Wimsey and others available online or elsewhere?

Love the channel,
Marc

For Donna...

Hi Donna. My XM has the ability to record and it's the simplest thing to do! I taught myself how to record and play back and now I never miss the shows I like, even if they're on at 3am. If you have the right type of XM, you don't need any other equipment. I encourage you to investigate this option. It's kept me up to date with "my sidekick" more often than not! Smile

Hi, Gang/Will - I have an excellent book on OTR but the name absolutely escapes me right now. Go to www.amazon.com, hit the BOOKS category and type in OLD TIME RADIO. You'll find the book, believe me. Actually, there are several fine books on the subject. But let Greg, the expert, recommend some; he'll know the book to which I refer. I've been up since 6 AM (late for me) it's nearly 8:30 PM now so my brain has turned to J-E-LL-O!
Good night all - and to Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are. HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU (thanks, Greg for the Roy Rogers show - more of that, please). Wink

I found out that there is a radio station out of Toronto/Ontario that on Friday night will be playin War of the Worlds. Don't know the call letters but the frequency is AM 740. I know they have a web site and stream their station over the internet, but don't know what the URL is. If you live in the New England or Great Lakes area, you can probably tune in to it, but if not, try streaming online.

These spooky halloween shows reminded me of an old Bill Cosby bit he did years ago about being home alone and listening to Lights Out,despite a warning against it from his parents. It was very funny from what I recall.

I enjoyed the Whistler episode this week, as always!

Did you know six Whistler MOVIES were made from 1944 to 1948? I discovered this a few weeks on October 5 when TCM TV network aired them (and this may have been reported then, I just haven't read any past comments yet). Richard Dix played in all but the last one, when Michael Duane starred. Pretty neat -- they open with the shadow of the Whistler and the Whistler's voice doing the intro. I recognized some Whistler radio plots, with variations.

I know you have reported this in the past, but who does the voice of the Whistler on the radio program?

Greg, I just want to say thanks again for your most excellent radio classics formatting. I do not always like the change up of times for presentations of different programs, but it is fair and well done. I think you do a great job of keeping us all happy. Nobody I know understands why I like the radio classics, but that does not matter to me. I know it is about art.
I guess you have already planned the December programming. I do not care for the month long Christmas programming, but I can flip to CBSRMT for the time being.
Funny how "owners" of broadcast rights will block commercial broadcasts and provide them free on the net.
I am still curious about the Damon Runyon programs as they are so unique.
Thanks for all your effort,
Beth

I am not much of a guy who thinks in so deeply about web design but I think your post had some valid points in it. Like designers are forced to design stuff within the limited code available and not go beyond it, their innovation is somewhat limited but still I think Web Design won't die! I agree that Amazon and other some big sites won't have a blog but now a days it's very important to have some sort of option available so people can quickly communicate their thoughts. I think Amazon if wants to shift it to that, they can get a customized CMS for themselves.
