Snowed In But Still Doing The Show

Here are the links for the schedule for February 14th to February 20th, 2010.

Sirius 118 XM 164 PDF Version and the Excel Version or the direct link to the page HERE

I have been trapped in three feet plus of snow, but thanks to modern technology, a home studio and the valuable assistance of some dedicated co-workers, I am able to keep the channel rolling.

Specials for Gale Gordon, Chester Morris and of course, Jack Benny. Also celebrating President's Day as well as bringing back Orson Welles in "The Count of Monte Cristo" and a mini "Man of Steel Marathon" with The Yellow Mask storyline of Superman

PHOTOS Below: Gale Gordon

PHOTOS Below: Chester Morris, Jack Benny

PHOTOS Below: Paul Dubov (Frank Race), Harry McNaughton (It's Higgins, Sir), Reginald Gardiner (Suspense - Merry Widower) on right with Basil Rathbone.

Chester Morris looks like he wants to throw a punch...use the gun...easier on the knuckles.

My grandkids live just west of DC and are enjoying the week off from school.

Thanks for more great pictures

I will remember Gale Gordon as the slightly less irritated Mr. Wilson on Dennis the Menace following the death of OTR everyman Joseph Kerns (Suspense's Man in Black). It was one of the shows I remember first watching as a kid when we first got cable circa 1983 or so.

I loved the pictures of him Greg, he has the same style mustache in his younger years and his older years!

Stay warm everyone up there, you all need to plan a trip to sunny Florida (which is cloudy and cold today as luck would have it).

I know you don't have the rights to put the Lone Ranger on, but an interesting Green hornet marathon would be the three episode sequence where the Green Hornet's identity is discovered by an agent of his father and then his father discloses who his great-uncle was. The first of the three episodes was titled "Expose" and was, I believe, in late 1947.

I'll always think of Gale Gordon as Lucille Ball's nemesis on the many Lucy TV show reruns. As a kid I used to love to hate him. Now that I'm older and seeing his picture again ... wow, he was quite the good-looking man, wasn't he?

I love listening to the channel but I especially enjoy your in-between commentaries, Greg. It tells me things I didn't know plus tells me about actors whose voices I wouldn't have recognized without your help.

I agree with Steve - never get enough of Jack Benny, Phil Harris, Johnny Dollar and Dragnet - and I would add Have Gun Will Travel, Gunsmoke, and anything John Dehner is a part of.

Glad to hear you are able to keep the channel going. No snow here in MN - just cold. Great schedule this week! Thanks for the Chester Morris special, and of course Johnny Dollar! Looks like there are lots of goodies on Monday when I'm off, too. Hope you are able to get out of the snow soon Smile

Hi, Martin! I agree with you - Jack Benny, Phil Harris & Alice Faye and John Dehner, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel --- and I'll add William Conrad and Orson Welles.
Greg - just heard the snippet of conversation with Peggy Webber about being "locked in a room" with the English actors. Neat story, lucky lady. I always loved Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes but I wasn't quite as fond of Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson; he was too buffoonish for the part.
HAPPY "39TH" BIRTHDAY, JACK BENNY. When I was a little girl, my maternal grandfather told me about Jack Benny and told me he was 39. You know what? I believed him ... !

Nice suit, Chester! Is it by Clipper Craft?

Although he was above draft age, Gale Gordon (and his fictional alter ego Mayor LaTrivia) served in the Coast Guard during WWII, participating in invasions in the Pacific.

I agree with Rosemary that Nigel Bruce was not a good Dr Watson. Watson was not a befuddled bumbler as Bruce played him and as the writers wrote the part.

Greg and the rest of us on the Eastern Seaboard are enduring one of the hardest winters I can remember (Greg, being a Chicagoan, however, probably has seen far worse). I tend to be a pessimist but I'm trying to change that. So, as I sit in my father's office, looking west at a beautiful blue sky and seeing mountains of snow, I'm listening to "Knute Rockne, All American," and I'm so grateful and thankful to Greg and to God (not necessarily in that order) for the folks who gave us XM/Sirius, for Greg's amazing work (mountainous, like the snow) and knowledge and for the wonderful programs such as Lux Radio Theatre. What a wonderful thing to have on a c-c-cold snowy day - classic radio and wonderful shows airing on it.
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, EVERYONE. Remember, even if you have no "significant other" in your life, you have the ability to love and to be loved. "Find someone and share your love. Find someone and DARE to love. Love us all or love just one. Don't miss love, you'll miss the fun." - from a Canada Dry Ginger Ale commercial of the 1970s. Isn't it NEAT that Jack Benny was born on VALENTINE's DAY?????? I absolutely LOVE that! HAPPY 39TH BIRTHDAY (AGAIN), JACK!!! Smile Smile Smile

Greg - Love listening! For Mother's Day last May my husband and daughter got me a lifetime subscription to XM and a "boom box" unit for the house. Then later in the Summer we took advantage of the Cash for Clunkers and traded our 13 year old, 235,000+ mile mini van - which didn't even have a cd player - for a brand new car that came with a three month trial subscription to XM !! For my birthday, they got me a lifetime subscription for the car!!! I love my family!

I listen on my way to and from work and whenever I am in the car. I only switch from 164 at the bottom or top of the hour during promos. I go to 151 Laugh for five or six minutes then right back to Classic Radio. When I go to bed I used to listen to the television until I fell asleep. Not anymore! I listen to the 10 to 11 (or later) slot.

I said all of that to say this... Keep up the great work! I really enjoy the back stories and find it so amazing that we are still talking about many of the same things. Patriotism, supporting our troops, the appeal for kindness and family values, etc. Today on Fibber and Mollie when Fibber asked his doctor how he felt about socialized medicine I about drove off the road laughing. I no longer dread my commute!! Kudos to you and your crew!

FAVORITE DRAMA: 1. Johnny Dollar 2. Gunsmoke 3. The Whistler 4. Suspense 5. The Six Shooter.
FAVORITE COMEDY: 1. Fibber McGee and Mollie 2. Our Miss Brooks 3. Jack Benny 4. The Great Gildersleeves 5. Bob Hope
FAVORITE SOUND EFFECTS TEAM: 1. Gunsmoke 2. Fibber 3. Johnny Dollar 4. Hop-along Cassity 5. Our Miss Brooks.

Thanks for the entertainment!

Flash Gordon is such a hoot! Imagine a culture where speed of light spaceships are commonplace and the personal weapon of choice is a sword.

Note to Annie: Back when I wore suits every day I would have given a lot to have a suit looking that great. Double breasted suits are the look, but I have not worn a necktie in more than two years and don't miss it.

Dearel Friend

I have always been intrigued by the sweeping and majestic Johnny Dollar background music, played prominently at the beginning and at the end of the show; I always wondered why someone had not used this beautiful music as a major movie soundtrack. So I googled it and found that I wasn't the only one impressed with the music. It seems that it was specially written by a European orchestra composer and has indeed been borrowed as soundtrack for other media venues.

The music is almost "too good" for a detective show. When I hear it I visualize majestic ocean panoramas and could easiy have seen this soundtrack as ideal for a movie like Mutiny on The Bounty. Take a listen next time folks.
